  • Day spa with range of massages and a bright gym

  • Clean rooms; some have charming rustic details

Cons
  • Geared mostly toward weddings and events

  • Mediocre buffet

  • Not ideal for sightseeing

Bottom Line

This resort in the middle of the Sicilian countryside is one of few with a spa, and offers some luxurious touches in a faux-historic building. Weddings and events are the main focus, though, so the mediocre buffet for guests seems like an afterthought, and is not on par with the rest of the food on offer in Sicily. It’s a good midpoint between Erice and Agrigento for road-trippers looking for a break, and often has good package deals, but is not the best base for sightseeing.

Scene

Large, landscaped property and a faux-historic mansion

Scene Hotel Baglio Basile

The sprawling property sits among vineyards on a property dotted with palm trees and large gardens. The modern building is styled like an historic mansion, providing a nice setting for its busy catering operation. Seating areas have rattan furniture, and decor includes wine barrels. The large spa area is a mix of rustic and modern, though some areas, such as a room with garish sponge-painted walls, come off as a little cheesy.

Location

In the countryside, 20 minutes from Marsala

The resort is off a country road about a 10-minute drive from the small town of Petrosino. There’s not much in the immediate area, and guests should plan on renting a car. It’s a 20-minute drive to Marsala and two hours to the temples of Agrigento.

Rooms

Large rooms in a range of styles

Rooms Hotel Baglio Basile

The 167 rooms are fairly large and decor varies. The Arancio Room has large tiled floors, rustic wooden furniture, and an exposed-brick arch at the head of the bed, while the Matrimonial Deluxe Room is modern and plush, with a sophisticated white, cream and blue color scheme and a huge, glass-walled stall shower in the large bathroom. The Marsala Residence has a basic kitchenette and the Comfort Room is bright and elegant, with a white and pale-green color scheme. The rooms have TVs, though the Arancio Room has an old tube model, and there are mini-fridges, small safes, and hairdryers. The keycard entry system can be tricky.

Features

Spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and large gardens

Features Hotel Baglio Basile

The hotel spa is a focus here, and has a big indoor pool in a space with arched glass windows and mosaic tiled columns. There are also tubs that resemble wine barrels, a sauna, a mosaic shower with massive rainfall showerhead and tricked-out lighting, and a range of massage treatments. The gym is airy and has a bright green accent wall as well as an adequate number of machines, though they're not the newest. There is also an outdoor pool open in the warmer months with hotel-provided loungers (ask for the more comfortable blue loungers, which are stored away). The hotel offers a free, limited shuttle bus to the beach.
