Bottom Line

On a hillside with a view of the Egadi Islands in the distance, and surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, the 48-room Resort Baglio Oneto is a historic mansion turned peaceful resort. This is a relaxing place to escape, with a nice outdoor pool and on-site restaurant with big wine selection. Owned by a well-known winemaking family, this hotel is particularly suited for wine enthusiasts, and tastings are on offer. Rooms are simple and relatively spacious, with balconies (but they have dated tube TVs). It’s close to the local airport and is a good base for exploring Marsala and Trapani.

Scene

Historic mansion with elegantly rustic decor

The 18th-century building with a brick tower has a picturesque setting with views stretching over the countryside. Inside, the hotel has high wood-beamed ceilings, creamy yellow walls, and floors of delft blue tile. Owned by a well-known wine family, the hotel mostly attracts wine lovers and couples looking for a quiet, romantic stay.

Location

In the country, within driving distance of Marsala

Baglio Oneto is out in the countryside and might be a bit difficult to find. It’s about a 20-minute drive from the center of Marsala and about a 10- to 15-minute drive from the Birgi Airport. There's not much to do in the immediate area, and the medieval city of Erice is about 50 minutes away.

Rooms

Simple but spacious with balconies

The resort has 48 air-conditioned rooms with earthy tile floors, yellow walls, and simple dark wood furnishings. Ground floor rooms have terraces and upstairs rooms have balconies. Rooms are not particularly upscale, with somewhat dated furniture and old tube TVs, but all have free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms have small marble vanities and shower/tub combos. The Tower Suite is unique and fairly rustic, with distressed brick walls juxtaposed with elegant furniture.

Features

The restaurant and wine cellar are highlights.

La Calandra restaurant serves Sicilian cuisine for lunch and dinner, as well as breakfast, and the wine cellar has a large selection of local wines, as well as wine produced on-site. During the summer, meals are served in the outdoor courtyard, by the pool. There’s a grand, rustic-looking function room that hosts weddings and other events, but the hotel lacks a spa and fitness center, as well as family-focused amenities.
