The 331-room TRYP Macarena -- located in front of Seville's old city wall -- has a great deal of Andalusian flavor for a chain property. There is a rooftop pool and terrace with panoramic views of Seville and the ancient city walls. Three restaurants serving regional dishes add to the authentic Spanish feel. This hotel is ideally located for Holy Week or the Feria de Abril de Sevilla, when the basilica next door plays a large role in the celebrations. Rooms are available in a variety of sizes but the grandeur of this property is fading, with some dated decor and complaints about thin walls.
Scene
Big hotel with Andalusian style
The TRYP Macarena is big and comfortable, with plenty of common spaces for relaxing. The rooftop terrace has sun beds and tables and chairs from which to enjoy the whitewashed buildings and tiled roofs of the city, with the ancient city walls right downstairs. The lobby atrium rises over a pretty tiled fountain. The sports bar is one lively spot in the hotel, drawing sports fans with its TV screens and variety of sports channels.
Location
By the old city wall and the Macarena Basilica, 20-minute walk from the city center
The TRYP Macarena is not directly in the central historic district of Seville, but it is near the famed Macarena Basilica and overlooks the ancient city wall and Andalusian Parliament building. A 20-minute walk or five-minute bus ride will bring guests to the city center. Located on one of Seville's major streets, business travelers will find it convenient. The Guadalquivir River is close by, and visitors can take a picturesque stroll down along the water, or wander into the nearby maze of streets filled with bars, restaurants, tapas bars, and shops.
Rooms
Slightly dated rooms with nice views
There are many room options at the TRYP Macarena, including singles for solo travelers and family rooms with extra beds for the kids. Some rooms face a busy street and suffer from street noise; request a room with a view of the old city wall and Parliament building. Standard rooms are not overly large, but strategic use of mirrors makes them appear more spacious, and the decorative touches (gold leafed mirrors, warm Spanish colors) are pretty, although the wall finishes are somewhat dated. Some guests have complained that rooms lack soundproofing, especially in the bathrooms, and that the traditional furniture and decor is on the tired side.
Features
Rooftop pool with panoramic views, excellent breakfast, and sports bar
The outstanding feature of the TRYP Macarena is its rooftop pool and solarium, with outdoor showers, sun beds, and tables and chairs for picnicking while gazing over Seville's rooftops and historic buildings. The hotel has underground parking (for an extra charge), but space is limited, so make a reservation before arrival. The international breakfast buffet (surcharge) is superb, and plentiful enough to fuel a long day of sightseeing. The conference center and banquet rooms are large and fully equipped. The three restaurants, (Japanese, Andalusian, and snack bar), cover the culinary bases (and football-watching needs). There is a guest laundry room.
