Los Abrigados occupies an excellent location near Uptown Sedona, with Oak Creek running past the property, and shopping and dining next door at the lovely Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. The grounds are gorgeous and include a mini-golf course. However, the rooms -- though most are large, with kitchenettes and balconies -- could use an update. More modern rooms in Uptown Sedona can be had at a similar price point at the Best Western Arroyo Roble.
Scene
22 acres of lush grounds alongside a stretch of Oak Creek, with many activities on-site
Los Abrigados is a shady oasis, with scores of native cottonwood and sycamore trees, the lovely Oak Creek running by, well-manicured landscaping, and outdoor works of art. Families may appreciate the numerous activities, including a grassy playground, a mini-golf course, a walk-through labyrinth, basketball, bocce ball, tennis, and two heated pools. Waterfalls splash and birds sing from the treetops, contributing to the tranquil vibe.
The hotel occupies the original homestead site of T.C. Schnebly and his wife, Sedona (for whom the town is named). The Schneblys arrived in 1899 and were among the first European settlers in Sedona, and the first to build a home capable of accommodating guests. Their original house is restored and can be seen on the hotel grounds. Nearby Schnebly Hill Road is another namesake of Sedona’s pioneering family.
Inside the lobby, which was renovated in 2010, a Spanish theme is evident in the red tile floors, arched windows, and wrought iron railings. A fountain, large fireplace, and high ceilings lend an air of elegance to the cavernous space. Upstairs is the expansive spa and fitness center, with a sitting room and outside deck. In the back of the hotel are the two pools -- a children’s pool with a water feature, and a large adult pool that is closed for renovation until June 2013.
Diamond Resorts acquired ownership of Los Abrigados in 2010, and a full renovation is currently in the works, slated to end in 2014.
Location
Next to Tlaquepaque and Oak Creek on Highway 179
Los Abrigados is located on Highway 179, adjacent to Oak Creek and the Tlaquepaque shopping area, which allows guests to explore the many galleries and restaurants on foot. Uptown Sedona is also within walking distance for more shopping. Views are limited from the hotel since the property's many trees obscure the nearby red rock cliffs. To satisfy a yearning for vistas, there is excellent hiking within a 5-minute drive, such as at the Marg’s Draw Trail and the Huckaby Trail.
The adjacent Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village is a lovely shopping area with cobblestones, a fountain, and art galleries (where you can sometimes watch artists at work).
Rooms
Spacious suites with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and balconies
Los Abrigados’s 196 rooms run the gamut from tiny studios to lavish houses. With a renovation currently ongoing (slated to end in 2014), travelers can expect to either find their rooms either outdated, or recently refreshed. New beds and appliances were installed throughout the hotel in July 2011.
Regardless of the state of renovation, there are flat-screen TVs (and the occasional tube TV), free Wi-Fi, and some iPod docks. Full kitchens or kitchenettes are included with most rooms, so guests can save by dining in. Outside, the balconies are large enough to hold chairs and a small table. Views are hit or miss; many windows face buildings or trees rather than the distant red rock cliffs.
