Bottom Line

Located in Secaucus, New Jersey, the budget-friendly, 149-room Meadowlands River Inn offers easy access to New York City. Previously a Hampton Inn hotel, it's serene, quiet, and comfortable (but don't expect frills). The New Jersey Transit bus to Manhattan stops right across the street from the hotel and departs every 15 to 20 minutes. MetLife Stadium, in Rutherford, is close by. Within a five-minute walk of the hotel is a shopping complex with restaurants, cafes, stores, and a movie theater.  The Meadowlands River Inn includes free Wi-Fi, parking, and a daily hot breakfast. There are also a fitness center, laundry room, 24-hour business center, and a social media corner with photo props in the lobby, but decor is dated.

Scene

A comfortable, budget-friendly option tucked away from the hustle and bustle

The Meadowlands River Inn offers calm and seclusion, all within easy access of New York City. Located off a major roadway, it's tucked behind a significant amount of greenery, and walking to the main entrance requires crossing a sprawling lawn with tall, wide trees that can make the hotel hard to spot. The spacious lobby is inviting, with pea-green couches, marble-top tables, and wide windows that allow plenty of light to spill into the space. The large eating area, with several tables, chairs, paintings, and a flat-screen TV, is in a sectioned-off area of the lobby,  and the hotel's manager's close-up portraits of breakfast items and foods add a homey touch.  The lobby also has a social media corner stocked with  silly party hats, giant glasses, colorful leis, and other props. Guests are encouraged to take pictures with them and send their favorite snapshots to the hotel's Facebook page.

Location

In New Jersey's suburban town of Secaucus, just outside New York City

The hotel is located in Secaucus, a New Jersey suburb that's about 20 minutes from Midtown Manhattan. The 320 bus to Times Square -- which departs every 15 to 20 minutes -- is right across the street; remember to purchase a ticket from the machines at the bus stop before boarding. Depending on Lincoln Tunnel traffic, the trip to the city can take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. Meadowlands is conveniently down the road from Harmon Meadow Plaza, a shopping complex with restaurants, cafes, offices, and a movie theater. The hotel is about a 20-minute drive from Newark Liberty International Airport.

Rooms

Homey and spacious with luxe color schemes

The quiet rooms at the Meadowlands River Inn have bland decor, but they're spacious and well-equipped for longer stays. King Bed Deluxe Rooms, King Bed Studies (which include full-size pullout sofas), and Double Bed Rooms let in lots of light from the windows. Decor includes red carpeting, gold curtains, wooden furniture, paintings, cream-colored walls, and crimson accent walls in some of the rooms. Beds are topped with three to four pillows, and there are breakfast-in-bed tray tables. Mirrored closets contain ironing boards and fold-out seats. Rooms also come with safes, microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms are clean, and decorated with soft green-and-white wallpaper with vine detailing. They include massage shower heads and toiletries.

Features

Enough standard freebies, but nothing extra

While Meadowlands isn't big on bells and whistles (there is no pool, lounge, or restaurant), it offers free Wi-Fi, a daily hot breakfast, parking, newspapers, and coffee, tea, and bottled water all day. The business center, which has desks, computers, printers, a conference table, extra paper, a dictionary, and a thesaurus, is open 24 hours a day.  The hotel's carpeted fitness facility has free weights, two treadmills, an elliptical machine, a bicycle, and a Stairclimber. Towels, wipes, a water machine, a flat-screen TV and a scale are also provided. The laundry room -- which has four coin-operated machines -- is within a small nook of the fitness center. There is also a private breakfast room, which serves as a meeting space for business travelers and small groups.
