Bottom Line

The 86-room River Street Inn is a mid-range boutique packed with local charm and character. Rooms are classic and lovely, with four-poster beds, hardwood floors, period furniture, and big windows. Some have decorative fireplaces, small balconies, and exposed brick walls. With four solid restaurants on-site, guests don’t have to go far to sample some great Southern cuisine, although the hotel's location in the Historic District allows for easy walking distance to many more eateries, as well as to top attractions and shops. Rates aren’t low for a three-pearl property, but this boutique has some nice touches that add value, including free nightly wine and cheese hours, free Wi-Fi, loaner bikes, and a pleasant fitness center. The Planters Inn in the Historic District offers similar features at slightly lower prices.

Scene

Beautiful historic boutique packed with original 200-year-old elements

The River Street Inn is hands down one of the most unique properties in Savannah. The original building dates back to 1817, when it was designed as a two-story cotton storehouse that was later expanded with the construction in 1853 of three additional floors. Throughout, original 200-year-old architectural and decorative elements give the property tons of local and historical charm. The imposing industrial-style architecture is complemented with exposed brick walls, pine floors, original (and now decorative) fireplaces, and beautiful period furniture. The five-story atrium is particularly impressive, with a big wooden staircase, a huge skylight, and landings decorated in a cozy Southern style, with cute flowery wallpaper, wainscoting, high-backed armchairs in earth tones, and rugs over handsome wooden floors. This traditional feel continues in rooms and other common spaces, and immediately transports visitors to a bygone era. Most guests here are couples wanting to experience a slice of old Savannah, though the location near ferries and the heart of the action is also convenient for business travelers.Rates at the River Street Inn are on par with other comparable hotels in town, and the property's overall charm and location overlooking the river is hard to beat. Still, those seeking something cheaper may want to consider the East Bay Inn, which is a tad simpler. Another solid option in the same price range as the River Street Inn is The Marshall House, though rooms are smaller and it lacks a fitness center. For something more upscale, check out The Bohemian Hotel Savannah Riverfront, Autograph Collection, known for its unique decor and hopping rooftop bar.

Location

On the northern edge of the Historic District, overlooking the Savannah River

Located between popular East Bay Street and the Savannah River, the hotel is just a few minutes' walk from the most popular restaurants, bars, and shops in the Historic District. There are three pretty parks within a two-block radius and many major tourist attractions can be reached in 10 to 15 minutes on foot, including the City Market, Telfair Museum, the Savannah College of Art and Design, and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Other main attractions, such as the Roundhouse Railroad Museum and Forsyth Park are each about a 17-minute walk from the hotel. This location also offers easy walking access to ferries and local public transport. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is a 20-minute drive away.

Rooms

Charming, spacious rooms with period furniture, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers

The hotel has 86 rooms, all decorated in a classic Southern style that includes wrought-iron or wooden four-poster beds, hardwood floors, period-style furniture, rugs, and heavy curtains with flowery prints. Most rooms have accent walls in bold colors and small sitting areas with plush chairs in brown hues, while others incorporate original architectural elements, such as fireplaces and exposed brick walls. Large windows let in lots of light and offer views of either Savannah River or the Historic District. Some units have small wrought-iron balconies, though they’re all too narrow for furniture. Standard in-room amenities include free Wi-Fi, Cuisinart coffeemakers, robes, flat-screen TVs with cable channels, and radios. Mini-fridges are not available, but each room is equipped with a basket full of snacks, as well as bottled water and a couple of sodas. Bathrooms are clean and spacious, and feature shower/tub combos and ample sink areas with antique-style taps, large mirrors, hairdryers, and a selection of toiletries.Nightly turndown service includes sweets from Savannah’s Candy Kitchen, as well as the weather forecast.

Features

Four dining options, great freebies, fitness center, meeting space, and valet-only parking

The River Street Inn is home to four dining options, all owned and run by locals. Located on the first floor, Bernie’s Oyster House serves up seafood in all shapes and sizes, along with soups, sandwiches, and appetizers. Tubby’s is a tad livelier, with live music several times a week and panoramic river views. The other two dining venues are Huey’s Southern Cafe, which offers traditional New Orleans cuisine -- including the famous beignets -- and Cafe M, a traditional coffee shop with a strong French flair. Every evening (except Sundays) guests are offered free wine and cheese at the Tavern, a casual spot on the second floor with board games, a pool table, and a TV. Additional freebies include Wi-Fi, morning coffee and fruit-infused water throughout the day in the lobby, loaner bikes, and passes for the Hutchinson Island ferry. The hotel’s fitness center is surprisingly charming, with exposed brick walls, large windows, and wooden ceilings. Equipment is limited to a handful of cardio and strength-training machines and free weights. Meeting space is available for rent, and valet parking can be requested for a daily fee. Pets are not allowed on-site.
