The 97-room DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Savannah Airport is a well-designed, mid-range chain hotel a five-minute drive from the airport it's named after. With large, modern rooms that include mini-fridges and microwaves, this hotel offers a comfortable place for business travelers and others to stay. There are a small indoor pool, fitness center, and 24-hour convenience store, and the hotel provides free Wi-Fi and transportation to the airport -- plus chocolate chip cookies on arrival. Guests who want easier access to the downtown sights could consider the Holiday Inn Express Savannah-Historic District, which has moderately higher prices.
Scene
A modern style that's more boutique-like than expected for a chain hotel
Though DoubleTree by Hilton is a popular mid-range chain hotel, its lobby decor has boutique hotel vibe. The compact, sleek reception desk is tucked beside the sliding-glass entrance doors, giving way to a huge lobby with soaring ceilings and enormous windows. Red leather and soft, heather gray couches and chairs are arranged around the room, which has a beautiful stone accent wall, and is decorated with framed black-and-white photography, minimalist lamps and chandeliers, and potted plants. A lengthy, marble-topped wood table sits before a flat-screen TV, offering space for group meals or for working. Beyond is the open-plan restaurant, where white tablecloths and white leather chairs lend a sophisticated air; there is another work-style table with outlets for guests who want to catch up on e-mail while dining. The bar, encircled with brown leather chairs, sits in the center of the restaurant, and wraps around to the buffet counter. With its ample natural light and modern style, the lobby and restaurant space are somewhat unexpected in a hotel of this caliber. Guests include business travelers and others who want close proximity to the airport.
Location
Down the road from the airport, 20 minutes from downtown
This DoubleTree is part of a cluster of hotels that are located just down the street from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport -- about five minutes' drive. The DoubleTree is on the outskirts of the circle, a little farther away from the rest, giving the sense of more privacy, as well as more space overall. In the area are several gas stations and a few cheap eateries -- including a waffle house and a grill-- but the sights and shopping of downtown Savannah are about a 20-minute drive from the hotel. Due to its location, the hotel draws mostly business travelers and those making short stops on longer drives. It is less ideal for tourists.
Rooms
Spacious, studio-like rooms with microwaves and mini-fridges
Rooms at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Savannah Airport are large and studio-like, with a black and blonde-wood color scheme that feels modern and somewhat less corporate than typical chain decor. However, with their dark carpeting and low-lighting, rooms can seem somewhat gloomy. Along with a king or two queen beds, each standard room has a seating area with a small gray couch, armchair, two ottomans, and a desk with office chair. A partial wall partition, decorated with vases, separates the sleeping and living spaces nicely and gives the sense of being in a suite without the extra cost. There are two flat-screen TVs in each room -- in the bedroom and seating areas -- in addition to a mini-fridge, microwave, and Keurig coffeemaker. Bathrooms are also sizable and modern, though rather plain, with shower/tub combos and nicer lighting. Suites are double the size, but stylistically no different.
Features
Indoor pool, fitness center, restaurant, and free Wi-Fi and airport shuttle
The DoubleTree by Hilton has a small, heated indoor pool that's not not great for laps, but could offer a soothing dip. Next to it, there is a nicely sized fitness center with several cardio machines and free weights in good condition, along with free earbuds for guests. The bistro-style restaurant serves lunch and dinner, along with buffet and a la carte breakfast (for a fee); to-go lunch items are also available. The bar is open nightly, with cocktails, wine, and beer. The hotel runs a 24-hour convenience store with snacks and drinks. In the lobby, there's a business center with two computers and a printer; two meeting rooms are also available. Coin laundry is on-site. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, along with free transport to the airport.
