Bottom Line

The 60-room Piscina Rei Hotel is a quaint Sardinian waterfront retreat with direct access to a beautiful private beach. The green grounds are connected by pathways that lead to amenities such as barbecue grills, a children's play area with swings, and an on-site restaurant and bar. Rooms are decorated with traditional, but somewhat outdated, furniture and decor, and have charming patios that look out onto the hotel gardens. For more modern furnishing, Il Vascello Hotel is an option, but it's farther away from the beach.

Scene

Cozy waterfront hotel with green grounds and beach vibe

The Villaggio Piscina Rei hotel is protected by a gated entrance off a desolate dirt road. This quiet and relaxing single-story salmon-colored building is surrounded by greenery, flowers, birds, and the sounds of crashing waves. Pathways wind through green grounds to the private beach, where bright cloth lounge chairs and umbrellas are available for rent. The small lobby is designed with large windows and decorated in a traditional Sardinian style, with rattan furniture, a small library book exchange, and a computer available for guest use.

Location

Remote location in Cagliari along the Tyrrhenian Sea

Located on a dirt road along the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Piscina Rei is in a slightly removed area and a car is necessary for exploring the more touristy sections of Cagliari. The Ristorante Pink Lady is a three-minute drive away, but most other attractions are about an hour from the hotel, including famous Cagliari cultural sights such as the Santuario e Basilica di Bonaria, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, and the Royal Palace. Dives are offered at Ogliastra Diving, which takes about an hour to reach. The Cagliari International Airport is also a one-hour drive away.

Rooms

Traditional, sparsely furnished rooms with charming open-air terraces

The Piscina Rei offers Deluxe and Superior room categories with one-, two-, and three-bedroom options available. Rooms are large and traditionally decorated in a Sardinian style, with sparse wall decorations and outdated furniture. In-room conveniences vary by room, but all include kitchenettes, private terraces with garden space, and large, bright bathrooms with bidets. Some rooms come with bunk beds and even washing machines. The hotel also offers four-room villas with an upstairs and downstairs. Pets are allowed.

Features

Children's activities, a large hot tub, and casual dining

The Piscina Rei's Il Peperoncino Marino, which has a tented white roof and a lot of natural light, serves Sardinian fare and pizza at dinnertime. There are also brightly painted picnic tables outside for children. Breakfast and lunch are served at the bar, which has an attached wood terrace with white curtains. The hotel has a lot for families, including an outdoor theater that hosts children's entertainment and a small playground on the sand. There's also a sailing school for kids eight and older and a large hot tub that looks more like small pool surrounded by grass and a couple of wooden lounge chairs. Guests can borrow pedal-boats and canoes for free.
