Idea Hotel Cagliari Santa Maria is a mid-range, chain hotel with 129 rooms in dire need of an update. Room furnishings are worn, and the decor looks as if it were haphazardly slapped together. The hotel is short on amenities, but it’s a 10-minute drive from the airport and provides a generous, free breakfast buffet with a variety of items. Guests who want more amenities may want to check out the Holiday Inn Cagliari, a modern hotel near the airport with a pool and fitness center -- and higher rates.
Scene
Chain hotel past its prime
It would be hard to walk through the Idea Hotel Cagliari Santa Maria and not make a list of things that need to be updated, starting with the sea-foam green patterned chairs in the lobby that look as if they’ve seen better days. The bar area, with red carpeting and odd built-in benches with red cushions, looks dated as well. The most appealing common area may be the breakfast room, where tile floors and wooden columns give the space a more timeless appeal. But the hotel is right off a major road and 10 minutes from the airport, so guests simply seeking a little shut-eye between flights might not mind the decor.
Location
Just off the major freeway loop near bars, a restaurant, and a supermarket
The hotel is just off Strada Statale 131, the major road in Sardinia that connects Cagliari with Porto Torres. The hotel shares a parking lot with a gas station, and there are a few bars, a restaurant, shops, and a supermarket nearby. A bus stop is near the hotel and Monteclaro Park can be reached in a 10-minute bus ride. Cagliari International Airport is a 10-minute drive away. Parking at the hotel is free.
Rooms
Dated furnishings, haphazard decor, and 32″ TVs
Rooms, with their stained carpets and worn furniture, are in need of a renovation. The dated mishmash decor includes striped bedding, gray carpeting that extends partially up the wall, and tacky lavender nightstands. Blue-striped curtains hang over the windows and an armless chair is covered with the same striped fabric found on the bed. Bathrooms are small with tiny showers. On a pleasant note, the rooms are spacious, and have 32-inch flat-screen TVs.
Features
Breakfast buffet with large variety of items and meeting rooms
Besides its proximity to the airport, the hotel’s best feature is its breakfast buffet that earns good reviews for its large variety of sweet and savory items. The hotel has a lounge bar open 24 hours a day, but no additional restaurant. There are three meeting rooms that can seat up to 200 people. Expect to pay for Wi-Fi.
