The upper-middle-range Hotel Petra Bianca is a romantic property with a scenic and quiet hillside setting in Cala di Volpe. Views of the surrounding landscape and ocean are lovely, but a car is necessary to reach the nearest beach and outside eateries. The 48 stylish rooms are done in a typical Sardinian style, outfitted with minibars, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs, plus most have outdoor spaces. An outdoor swimming pool and separate kiddy pool have excellent vistas, and an all-day restaurant serves free buffet breakfasts. A small gym and piano bar are on-site, but there's no spa here. Also on the downside, Wi-Fi requires a fee. Travelers wanting an upscale hotel within walking distance of the beach may prefer the similarly priced Balocco Hotel.
Scene
Hillside hotel with elegant Sardinian style and romantic ambience
Set on a hillside with lush greenery and the distant sea as a backdrop, Hotel Petra Bianca exudes a romantic vibe. Rustic, Mediterranean features include the hotel's pantile roof and natural stone exterior, drift-wood statement pieces, and seafoam-green and cream patterned couches. A typical Sardinian style is found throughout, with soft neutral hues, blue accents, and distressed wood furniture. Public spaces -- and most rooms -- take advantage of the setting with big windows or outdoor spaces, providing lovely views of the area. However, the hilltop location means there's little in the immediate surrounds, and a car rental or taxi is required to reach sights or outside dining. Despite a small kiddy pool next to the main outdoor pool, guests are almost exclusively couples on vacation.
Location
Peaceful, scenic location, a short drive from Porto Cervo
Hotel Petra Bianca has a quiet and peaceful location on a hill, meaning there's nothing to do in the immediate area. A few restaurants and a beach are within an easy five-minute drive, or a far (30- to 45-minute) walk. Fortunately, the hotel does offer a free shuttle to and from the beach. Golf enthusiasts will appreciate that Pevero Golf Club is a quick five-minute drive away as well. Guests will likely need a car or taxi for exploring the area. More restaurants and shops can be found in Porto Cervo, a 10-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Sardinian-style rooms with desks, minibars, and AC
The 48 rooms here are done in a typical Sardinian style that's attractive and elegant. Expect distressed wood furniture, terra-cotta tiling, and pops of blue in painted headboards, patterned armchair upholstery, and throw pillows. Rooms have an understated elegance that feels warm and light, though some guests may find the look a bit underwhelming or outdated. Nevertheless, they're well-equipped and all except for the entry-level Standard Rooms have furnished outdoor spaces -- many with lovely sea views. All units come with air-conditioning, desks, sitting areas, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and wardrobes. Floor-to-ceiling peach-gradient bathroom tiling can feel a bit loud, but they come with bidets, hairdryers, and toiletries. Entry-level units have shower stalls, while upgraded rooms add separate bathtubs. A couple suites have living spaces and huge balconies, plus one has a private pool.
Features
Pool with a view and restaurant serving well-reviewed food
Although not on-site, Hotel Petra Bianca provides free shuttle service to and from the beach, as it's not within walking distance of the hotel. For a refreshing dip on-site, there's a well-sized outdoor pool with views of the surrounding greenery and sea. The surrounding deck has loungers, umbrellas, and an adjacent kiddy pool. Other public spaces make the most of the scenery, including the piano bar with an indoor area and outdoor terrace with modern wicker seating. The all-day restaurant also offers alfresco seating, in addition to well-reviewed fare and free breakfasts with hot and cold items. A small gym is on-site, but there are no spa facilities here. A notable con is the charge for Wi-Fi.
