Balocco Hotel is a four-pearl hotel situated on the outskirts of Porto Cervo, in the Costa Smeralda. Its remote hilltop location gives the hotel a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful panoramic views, though it's a 15-minute walk to the beach. Classic Sardinian architecture and decor create a relaxed, elegant atmosphere, and the picturesque outdoor pool, with its peaceful low-key vibe, is great for unwinding. The 41 rooms have a similar feel and all have marble bathrooms, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Some rooms have balconies with beautiful sea views, and there's a good handful of outdoor lounge and dining spaces throughout the hotel -- all with gorgeous Porto Cervo views. It's a relatively good value in a pricey area, but for a less expensive stay, try the Colonna Park Hotel instead.
Scene
Peaceful, relaxed atmosphere, with classic Sardinian architecture and local handmade details
More relaxed than its posh neighbors, Balocco Hotel was one of the first properties to be built when the Costa Smeralda boom began back in the 1960s. This is now a part of Sardinia with private jet and helicopter services, exclusive resorts, and some of Europe’s most expensive real estate. However, while Balocco Hotel is more down-to-earth by comparison, but no less charming. The hotel is integrated via a series of steps and terraces into a steep hill, embedded into the wind-shaped rocks typical of this part of Sardinia. The higher the level of the hotel, the more it seems to blend seamlessly with its surrounding rugged landscape, with sunny patios and sun loungers tucked perfectly into the rocky hillside. Classic Sardinian architecture and decor -- think: romantic whites, earthy terra cotta, and wood -- convey a relaxed, elegant atmosphere. The lobby and social areas are cool and airy, with white stucco walls and locally sourced textiles. Its remote location on the hill gives beautiful views over Porto Cervo, and a peaceful atmosphere that unsurprisingly attracts mostly couples.
Location
On the outskirts of Porto Cervo, a 15-minute walk from the nearest beach
Balocco Hotel is situated on a local road embedded in the rocky Galluran landscape, surrounded by rock formations and Mediterranean shrubs. Although it’s on the outskirts of Porto Cervo, and well-removed from its hustle and bustle, there are several good Italian restaurants just down the road, including the famed Spinnaker, which is just a four-minute walk away. Other restaurants are also within walking distance, and Porto Cervo’s marina is a ten-minute walk away. The nearest beaches, Cala Granu and Spiaggia del Giglio, will take about 15 minutes to reach on foot. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the area’s most famous beach, Pevero Beach, though to really explore the region and get around easily, it's essential to rent a car. Expect a 30-minute drive to the Aeroporto di Olbia Costa Smeralda.
Rooms
Elegant and relaxed, with traditional Sardinian handicrafts, AC, minibars, and marble bathrooms
In keeping with the traditional Sardinian theme, all rooms are decorated in romantic whites and light pastel shades, with furnishings and furniture supplied from local artisans. Some rooms have four poster beds, natural wood accents, and sculptures derived from local wood, adding to the relaxed and natural feel. All rooms have marble bathrooms with either a tub or shower (or both), and come with AC, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and free Wi-Fi (though you'll need a new access code every 24 hours). Some rooms have balconies and sea views -- it may be worth shelling out the extra cash for one located on a higher floor as the views over Porto Cervo's harbor are excellent. Higher category rooms come with bathrobes and slippers, a free welcome bottle of Prosecco, fruit baskets, and local sweets. Layouts of the rooms vary: Junior Suites have an extra bed and are better suited for families, while Suites come with kitchenettes and separate living areas, as well as jetted tubs and huge balconies.
Features
Picturesque outdoor pool, airy and elegant lounge bar, and beautiful breakfast terrace with gorgeous views
The biggest perks at the Balocco Hotel are its immaculate outdoor pool, idyllic outdoor dining spaces, and panoramic views over Porto Cervo and the Mediterranean. Despite somewhat rumpled cushions on the sun loungers, the pool is clean and well maintained, with a tranquil atmosphere, beautiful adjoining garden, and poolside bar serving drinks and snacks until evening. The bar area doubles as breakfast seating in the morning, and guests are free to take breakfast there or on the breathtaking higher level terrace, where there are better views of Porto Cervo’s harbor. The airy and elegant lounge bar is decorated in romantic cream shades and also has an outdoor terrace with panoramic views and chic wicker furniture. The free continental breakfast is plentiful, and includes cooked eggs and fresh fruit. Unfortunately, dinner is not offered at the hotel, so guests will have to venture elsewhere. There is free parking, and Wi-Fi is free throughout.
