Bottom Line

The Bagaglino I Giardini di Porto Cervo is a 120-apartment property decorated and furnished in an outdated 1980s style. Spacious private apartments dot the property, which also has outdoor fitness and sports facilities, a resort square for entertainment, a Mediterranean garden that includes fountains and small lakes in minor disrepair, and direct access to the picturesque Cala Pitrizza beach. The hotel lacks modern conveniences such as in-room Wi-Fi and AC, while the nearby Hotel le Palme -- which has higher rates and smaller rooms -- does come with these amenities. A shuttle service, for a fee, can take guests to the Pevero Golf Club about 15 minutes away, and the hotel's remote location means that most guests rent a car during their stay.

Scene

Large mid-range hotel with spacious, dated apartments on a stunning Mediterranean property

The Mediterranean open-air hallways of the hotel -- with its chipped stucco walls, intricate crisscrossed woodwork, wood-beam ceilings, and arched doorways -- connect to a network of pathways and log bridges over small waterways that lead to a beautiful beach. From the beach, the hotel looks like a quiet, weathered Italian village that pales in comparison to the stunning seaside community, which caters to those seeking a quiet solo, couples, or family getaway. However, it offers a solid value for those willing to overlook dated rooms in favor of stunning views.

Location

Overlooking the serene green waters of the Cala Pitrizza bay

Dubbed a former "elite playground" by the New York Times, the seaside community of Porto Cervo in northern Sardinia centers around Costa Smeralda, or the Emerald Coast, which was bought and developed in the 1960s by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV as an exclusive getaway for the rich. These days Costa Smeralda, a 30-minute drive from the Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport, attracts tourists from all walks of life -- especially during its peak season in August and September. The Bagaglino hotel, which overlooks the green waters of the Cala Pitizza bay, sits in a slightly removed location, far from major attractions and public transportation. It's a 16-minute drive to Pevero Golf Club. For a charge, the Bagaglino shuttle bus can take guests eight minutes away to the Porto Cervo square to sample Sardinian fare at the nearby restaurants.

Rooms

Large private apartments come with kitchens and living rooms, but furnishings are dated.

The Mediterranean views from the terraces and patios are a serene distraction from the outdated interior furnishings -- in various stages of dilapidation -- and lack of frills in the Bagaglino apartments. There are sparse two- and three-bedroom apartments that include patios or terraces with views, kitchens, double bedrooms and living rooms, and (in some apartments) sofa pullout beds. The three-bedroom units have an additional room with a bunk bed and can fit up to six people. The two-bedroom apartments fit four. Room decor is dated and minimal; tiled floors and wicker furniture are in need of an update, and sparse walls are simply decorated with rustic renditions of country flowers. All rooms have flat-screen TVs.A big complaint by many guests is that there's no Wi-Fi (it's only available near the reception desk) or AC in the rooms. However, portable AC units and cribs can be reserved for a fee. Apartments can be booked on a "Bed and Breakfast" basis to include a daily breakfast buffet.

Features

Child care programs and entertainment activities for adults under the Sardinian stars

The Bagaglino offers seasonal Mini Club and Young Club programs where children and teenagers (up to 16 years old) can listen to stories, play games, take tours, play in sports tournaments, and engage in other activities, giving the adults a night off. Be sure to check with the hotel if the club is operating during the season when you visit. The Bagaglino square is the stage for nightly small events and shows. Hiring a car (which can be can be costly), or renting one, will allow you to experience all of Costa Smeralda's nightlife, which can be a bit of a drive away. There is no fitness center, but the hotel does have outdoor sports facilities like a tennis court.
