Bottom Line

The mid-range Roosevelt Inn & Suites offers a surprising package of amenities for a modest property that was once a motel. Its newer building includes an indoor recreational complex with a large lap pool, whirlpool, spacious fitness center, saunas, and spa treatment rooms. The nicely landscaped, 16-acre grounds include two tennis courts, outdoor heated pool, and courtyard with gazebo. A continental breakfast is included in the room rates. Its 49 rooms are clean and spacious, but their traditional decor feels dark and dated. Microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi are standard. Expect a 10-minute walk to town. For a more traditional chain hotel with comparable rates, the mid-range Best Western Plus Saratoga Springs offers spacious rooms and a free hot breakfast buffet.

Roosevelt Inn & Suites

Scene

Quiet hotel with sprawling grounds that attracts families

This quiet, older hotel has three buildings on 16 acres of rolling landscaped lawns, including its original, motel-style building where the lobby and breakfast room are located. The cluster of buildings resembles an apartment complex, with a central courtyard and outdoor pool area. Impressive bronze statues of jockeys and thoroughbreds pay homage to the area’s long horse racing tradition. Several areas of the rolling lawn offer places for children to play or adults to relax in shaded areas. The lobby has a traditional and somewhat dark decor, with dark-wood paneling and furniture. A stone fireplace is along an outer wall, and racks of tourist information greet arriving guests. Green-and-purple carpet in a floral pattern leads to the breakfast area that features wood booths and Mission-style wood chairs. Racing theme art decorates some walls. This hotel attracts a diverse mix of guests including lots of families.

Location

One minute from Interstate 87 and 10 minutes to downtown Saratoga Springs

Roosevelt Inn & Suites is located on South Broadway, about a one-minute drive off Interstate 87 and a 10-minute drive into the historic heart of downtown Saratoga Springs. Two restaurants are within a one-minute walk on the same side of the four-lane road, but that’s about it for restaurants or attractions within walking distance. It’s approximately a 10-minute drive to the Saratoga Springs Performing Arts Center, eight minutes to Saratoga Springs Spa State Park, and about six minutes to the Saratoga Springs Casino and Hotel and Saratoga Springs Race Course. Skidmore College is an 11-minute drive, and the Saratoga Springs National Historical Park and its Revolutionary War battlefields are 17 minutes away. The Six Flags Great Escape theme park is a 25-minute drive, as is Albany International Airport. The nearest Amtrak station is 13 minutes away by car. Ample free parking is available on the hotel’s surface lot.

Rooms

Rooms with traditional decor that can feel dark and dated

Guest room decor varies somewhat by the room category, but each is decorated in a traditional style that is rather dark. The rooms that we saw had either deep red or black carpet with gold accents, as well as floral-print bedspreads in gold or white and pink that feel dated. The dark wood furniture typically includes dressers, desks, and nightstands. We saw both yellow and beige patterned walls, and much of the upholstered chairs and sofas had various patterns including leopard prints and other darker designs. On the plus side, rooms are spacious and most are well maintained, though a few past guests have reported minor housekeeping and maintenance issues. Standard and Deluxe Rooms come in king, queen, or two double bed options, and those in the older section have exterior entries. Many of the rooms have private balconies overlooking the pool or lawn areas. There are several styles of suites that have sleeper sofas, balconies, and sitting areas or separate living rooms. The larger suites have equipped kitchens, and select suites have whirlpool tubs. As with the rest of the guest rooms, bathrooms are generally roomy but dated, with fussy wallpaper, green tiles, and shower/tub combos behind brass-framed sliding doors. Standard amenities in all rooms include flat-screen TVs, microwaves, mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers. Note that smoking is allowed in some rooms.

Two pools, fitness center with saunas, spa treatments, and free Wi-Fi and continental breakfast,

For an unassuming, mid-range hotel, the Roosevelt Inn offers more amenities than guests might expect. The 16-acre complex has two outdoor tennis courts and a heated outdoor pool that’s a bit small, but it's nine feet deep at one end. Several umbrella tables surround the pool, and a couple of wood decks are set with Adirondack chairs covered by umbrellas. The brick-lined central courtyard has a lovely gazebo and seating. The indoor pool area offers both a large lap-style pool and a whirlpool that's surrounded by lounge chairs. It’s adjacent to the spacious fitness center that has several cardio machines and weight-training equipment as well as free weights. It also has men’s and women’s saunas and spa treatment rooms that provide various massages, body treatments, and facials.

Continental breakfast is included in room rates, but it’s the only meal available. It includes coffee, juice, bagels, and waffles. The lobby shop sells snacks and there are vending machines with beverages. There's a computer station with a printer and internet access, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
