Bottom Line

This mid-range hotel, part of a Japanese chain, is right in the middle of Sapporo, just two blocks from Odori Park and Odori Station, and close to plenty of shopping. The hotel has plain, often dated decor, but the 147 rooms -- which include suites with separate living rooms -- are large by Japanese standards and decorated in soothing colors. There are three on-site restaurants, including two that serve breakfast, a Chinese eatery, and a modern bar. For something with similar rates and features, but more contemporary interiors, travelers should investigate the Mitsui Garden Hotel, which is closer to Sapporo Station but has smaller rooms.

Scene

Simple business-style hotel with dated aesthetic

Like many hotels in downtown Sapporo, this is a modest-size property that's just slightly past its prime, but still a reliably pleasant place to bed down for a night. Though it draws a diverse clientele -- in part owing its reasonable rates for the central location -- there's an undeniably corporate look to interiors. The lobby is very '90s, with lots of red brick, pink granite, and taupe all coming together in a space that noticeably lacks windows -- in fact, almost every aspect of this hotel looks aged and heavy, from the red-brick exterior to the chunky furniture set throughout. Seating comes in grays, browns, and beiges, with older carpeting in the hallways. The bar is serene, though, with large rounded gray armchairs and wood-paneled walls, and the style in the restaurants is a bit fusty. Business travelers make up a good percentage of visitors here, though plenty of vacationing couples, solo travelers, and families pass through as well.

Location

Near Odori Park, close to trains, shopping, and attractions

The hotel is located two blocks south of Odori Park, close to all of the shops and restaurants in the center of Sapporo. Odori Subway station is only a three-minute walk from the hotel, making it simple to navigate the city. It’s a 15-minute walk to the Sapporo JR station and the Sapporo Clock Tower, both of which can be reach in 10 minutes by using the subway. The Tanuki Koji Shopping Arcade is a five-minute walk from the hotel and a 10-minute walk to the Sapporo TV Tower and Ramen Alley. The Sapporo Beer Museum is a 13-minute drive, and it's a half-hour by public transportation to the Mount Moiwa Ropeway (15 minutes by car). The Mount Okura Observatory is a 20-minute drive outside of town, and travelers should anticipate a 25- to 30-minute drive to the Okadama Airport.

Rooms

Spacious and clean, filled with neutral colors

One of the best features of the hotel’s 147 rooms is their size -- starting at 28 square meters (301 square feet), they are far larger than many in central Sapporo. The look is thankfully a bit more modern than the hotel's common areas, and decor is rendered in soothing neutrals, with gray or tan carpeting and light-colored wood furniture with clean lines. The style is plain, but the rooms are clean, and most have a table and chair set up next to the windows; suites have separate living rooms with plush, cream-colored sofas and chairs arranged around coffee tables. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles for coffee or tea, and free Wi-Fi. Suites also include a wet bar, though the cabinets are a little worn. Basic and dated bathrooms are on the small side, with curtained shower/tub combos and long vanities as well as robes, slippers, and hairdryers.

Features

Three restaurants plus a hotel bar and shops

The hotel has three restaurants, including Restaurant Continental, which serves French cuisine, as well as a Western-style breakfast buffet. Suginome restaurant serves Japanese breakfasts as well as lunch and dinner, while the Toh Ka Lin Chinese restaurant serves lunch and dinner. There’s also a separate bar, which serves light meals, and the Precious lounge. Room service is available, and breakfast is not included in standard room rates. There are shops that sell snacks and drinks, as well as clothing and accessories. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and laundry services are available. The hotel has no private parking, but there is public parking nearby. The hotel can help arrange local excursions and tours.
