The 92-room Volcano View Hotel Santorini stands apart from other four-pearl properties in the area with its contemporary designs and private cliffside terraces facing the coastline and Aegean. Modern rooms feature traditional Santorinian architecture and sea vistas from terraces, and the villas have private pools and kitchenettes. Tiered terrace common areas have three pools, a massage canopy, a poolside bar, and a dining patio for the on-site Greek restaurant. Breakfast is included in room rates. This hotel is a solid option for well-to-do couples, but the pool bar closes early and the location is removed (although there is a free shuttle to town). Those looking for a more centrally located hotel could consider the Aria Suites.
Scene
Upscale hotel with modern decor and whitewashed cliffside terraces
The hotel's structure reflects traditional Santorinian style with whitewashed exterior walls and sits perched on the jagged cliffs of Fira with terraces facing the Aegean. Unlike most hotels in the area, the Volcano View Hotel Santorini has contemporary flair with interiors that were renovated over a two-year period, beginning in 2013. Pale-blue ceilings in the small lobby and cream-colored modern sofas and dining chairs provide ample indoor lounge space, and there are windows that overlook the sea. Display cases are filled with designer jewelry for sale. Overall the vibe is romantic and upscale. However, this hotel is less than ideal for kids and travelers who might have trouble managing the property's numerous steep stairs.
Location
Cliffside location, a five-minute drive to Fira town
The hotel is situated on a cliff, off a two-lane road in Fira, a small town with a market, a car-rental company, and a bakery. This off-the-beaten-path location is 20 minutes by foot or five minutes via the free shuttle to town. The Santo Winery is a 13-minute walk away, and it’s a 10-minute drive to the Museum of Prehistoric Thira. ATV rentals, donkey rides, and boat tours can be arranged through the front desk. Getting to the Santorini Airport takes about 10 minutes by car. The drive to Oia -- known for its sunsets -- takes half an hour.
Rooms
Rooms, suites, and private villas with fresh, contemporary decor and stunning sea views from terraces
Contemporary room designs -- atypical for Santorini hotels -- are stylish with dove-gray textiles, blue chevron bed runners, and streamlined light wood furniture. Arranged in the main building or on the cliff, rooms and suites -- many of which were renovated in 2011 -- have balconies or terraces that offer stunning sea views. Standard Rooms are good for friends with two twin or two double beds, and Superior Rooms fit up to three people. Family Maisonettes offer two levels with living rooms. Two-bedroom Grand Suites and one-bedroom Junior Suites have living rooms. The most extravagant option are one- and two-bedroom villas with private pools, welcome wine and fruit gifts, and kitchenettes in most. The Villa Artemis and Villa Sapphire also have hot tubs. All rooms offer flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, irons, hairdryers, bathrobes, and slippers. Bathrooms are pleasant with modern fixtures, plaster designs, showers, and whirlpool tubs in some.
Features
Stunning Aegean views from three pools, restaurant, pool bar, massage terrace, and event space
The Volcano View Hotel Santorini has a series of cliffside terraces housing three big pools surrounded by stylish lounge chairs. The pool on the lowest terrace has access to the Harbour Watch Bar, which closes early but serves tasty sandwiches, snacks, and cocktails. The smallest pool has a relaxed vibe, and the third pool sits beside the dining terrace of the Caldera restaurant, a Greek restaurant where a free breakfast is served in the morning. The Cafe Bar is also located in the restaurant and provides wine, beer, and cocktails. Hanging over the cliff is a lovely terrace, where guests can get couple or solo massages. Weddings, dinner parties, and events can be arranged on the pool deck. Two computers are also available in the lobby, and there's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, free outdoor parking, and airport and port transfers (for a fee).
