If wine, spa treatments, and Caldera views are your thing, look no further than the upscale Suites of the Gods Spa Hotel in Megalochori. It's just a four-minute walk to the popular Venetsanos Winery and the hotel's atmospheric four-level spa was once a wine cellar: the walls are still stained red. Kids under the age of 18 aren't allowed, so the scene by the Caldera-facing infinity-edge pool and Sky Bar is romantic, especially at sunset. The 27 tasteful Suites all have Caldera views, and some have plunge pools and fireplaces. Breakfast is included in the room rate and there's a full restaurant. The biggest complaint here is that the scenic location is far from the tourist outposts of Fira (15-minute drive) and Oia (35-minute drive). For something in the heart of Fira, check rates at The Aressana Spa Hotel and Suites, which also has a spa.
*Editor's note, our latest photos don't include the hotel's infinity edge pool and newest suites.
Scene
Cycladic architecture overlooking the Caldera with sunset views
From the street (really more of a dead end near a parking lot) Suites of the Gods Spa Hotel doesn't look like much more than a low-lying terra-cotta structure. The lobby isn't much more intriguing, with a sponge-painted reception desk and mismatched modular sofas. However, a large window overlooks the back of the property and showcases the best of what's to come: uninterrupted Caldera views from the gorgeous pool deck with an infinity-edge pool and chic glass-encased bar. There's a second pool (leftover from before a renovation) that doesn't get as much sun behind the infinity-edge pool. From the pool deck, steps on both sides lead to wings of rooms, the restaurant, and a huge secluded whirlpool. Kids under the age of 18 aren't allowed, so the atmosphere is romantic. We felt a bit of a party scene midday with club music by the pool and guests drinking bottles of wine.
Location
On the Caldera rim in the village of Megalochori
Suites of the Gods has an excellent location on the Caldera rim in the lesser visited (compared to Fira and Oia) village of Megalochori. The out of the way location means there are fewer crowds and more space, but apart from Venetsanos Winery (a four-minute walk) there's little in immediate walking distance apart from other hotels.
Rooms
Lovely Suites with Caldera views and Greek God names
There are two separate wings of Suites; the first was built in 2003 and the second was completed in 2016. All 27 Suites are cave-style (which means whitewashed walls, rounded corners, and windows in the front) and tastefully appointed with modern conveniences like free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, safes, and flat-screen TVs. Decor ranges from wrought-iron beds with flowing white drapes to more modern units with chic built-in sofas and clean-lined furniture. Some units have upgraded features like fireplaces and private plunge pools or whirlpools. The Honeymoon Cave Suite has a cute heart-shaped window. Bathrooms range by Suite. Some have large traditional tubs with showerheads, while others have step-in showers. Toiletries, hairdryers, towels, bathrobes, and slippers are provided. All units have amazing Caldera views, though some are slightly better than others.
Features
Two outdoor pools, historic wine spa, Greek restaurant, and Sky Bar
Features at Suites of the Gods are truly outstanding, thanks to the extra space that comes with a Megalochori location. The highlight and main social hub is the pool deck that holds a gorgeous infinity-edge pool overlooking the Caldera, and a second smaller pool towards the back of the deck that doesn't see as much use. An almost hidden whirlpool tub is located on the edge of the property. Sky Bar provides wines, cocktails, and specialty coffees by the pools. A free hot breakfast buffet of Greek and Western items is served every morning in Celebrities restaurant, and both lunch and dinner are available a la carte. Room service is provided.
For honeymooners and spa buffs, the spa is a must visit. Originally built as a wine cellar over 100 years ago (wine still stains the walls) the spa now features a co-ed relaxation lounge, four private treatment rooms, one couple’s treatment room, an indoor cave pool, steam grottos, and an outdoor pool. Soothing waterfalls and displayed winery artifacts add ambience. The space is also home to a small fitness center, but the dated cardio equipment doesn't get much use.
The hotel is also home to a huge wedding and conference facility which has it's own bar and restrooms, plus a private entrance. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Free parking is available in a nearby lot.
