The Hotel Mathios Village is a family-run complex situated in the less-touristy southern end of Santorini island. Its location means easy access to the archeological site of Akrotiri and a short walk to the coast with views over the caldera. Its 30 simply styled rooms have furnished terraces and balconies, though some cheaper rooms are small and prone to noise. Home-style cooking, friendly staff, and peaceful pool terrace make this hotel a decent mid-range option -- though families with kids might struggle to keep them entertained.
Scene
Simple, friendly family-run hotel with peaceful, homey ambience
There's something rather charming about the simple and unpretentious nature of the Hotel Mathios Village. Constructed in the traditional Cycladic style with whitewashed plaster arches and natural rock walls, this family-run hotel comprises low-rise buildings arranged around a peaceful central pool terrace. Inside, the lobby has the cozy ambience of a traditional Greek home with comfy sofas and antique wooden furnishings. The staff and the hotel owner -- Mr Kostas -- are known for providing guests with particularly warm and personal hospitality. The hotel is popular with tourists of all ages as well as groups keen on exploring nearby archeological sites.
Location
Out the edge of quiet Akrotiri village on south side of the island
The hotel is situated in the relatively remote tourist area at southern end of Santorini on the outskirts of Akrotiri village. The main nearby attraction (10 to 15 minutes' walk) is the Akrotiri archeological site which -- like Pompeii -- was preserved by volcanic ash; it's a possible source of inspiration for Plato's theory of Atlantis. Stunning coastal views over the caldera are also a short five-minute walk away to the north, while the striking Red Beach is a seven-minute drive away in the other direction. Santorini Airport is about 20 minutes' drive, while the main port is around 15.
Rooms
Clean, traditionally styled rooms, each with a furnished terrace or balcony
The hotel's 30 rooms are traditionally styled with simple wooden furnishings, marble-top nightstands, cheerful yellow comforters, and tile floors -- all of which open onto furnished balconies or terraces overlooking the pool or gardens. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, fridges, and free Wi-Fi, though there are no tea/coffee facilities or bottled water. Bathrooms are nondescript but clean with wall-mounted hairdryers and shower/tub combos. While most rooms are spacious enough, some Standard Rooms are small and by a noisy road.
Features
Authentic Greek cooking and peaceful swimming pool terrace
A fairly good buffet breakfast comprising the usual yogurt, fruit, cereals, and eggs is served each morning on tables outside next to the pool, and is usually included in the rate. A half-board option also includes an evening meal in the hotel's restaurant where the owner's mother (know as "Mama") serves up a menu traditional home-style cooking and homemade wine. The outdoor swimming pool unheated but a fairly good size and surrounded by plenty of loungers and a poolside bar. Rules about no diving or splashing can be frustrating for kids but helps ensure that noise is kept to a minimum. The owner also runs a travel agency on-site offering excursions, boat trips, and car rental.
