Avaton Resort And Spa

Even by the island's standards, Avaton Resort is an especially chic and stylish example of Santorini hotel. The whitewashed, gentle curving architecture with elegant archways is traditional for Santorini, and inside glass paneling and cool grays give the place a more contemporary feel. Opened in 2007, this small but perfectly formed boutique hotel boasts those iconic views and is ideally positioned for soaking up the stunning sunsets. Its position high on the caldera cliffs also makes it one of the breezier places to stay (which even makes it sometimes difficult to dine outdoors). As an adult-only property, however, the vibe is serene and secluded, appealing to couples celebrating special occasions and honeymooners.

The hotel is perched on the cliff face on the north outskirts of the relatively serene Santorini village of Imerovigli. Its position means -- unlike many similar hotels -- it's not sandwiched between other properties and features some wonderful uninterrupted views along the coast, as well as out to sea. The village is located just north of the island's capital, Fira -- a bustling tourist hub that's about five minutes' drive (or 40 minutes on foot). The property is around 20 minutes' drive from Santorini Airport, or nearer 30 minutes from the main port.

The property has just 11 rooms. Categories include Superior Rooms, located on the lower floor near the pool with a shared terrace; Deluxe Rooms, on the lower floor with private veranda or on the higher floor with a balcony; the Honeymoon Suite, on the higher floor with two balconies; and the Avaton Suite, on the higher floor with private balcony. All rooms were fully refurbished in 2013 and decor is chic and tasteful with smart contemporary furnishings and crisp white walls. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, CD/DVD players, well-stocked minibars, and free Wi-Fi, as well as free wine, fruit, and flowers upon arrival. Bathroom amenities include robes, flip-flops, and natural Greek bath products. Both suites also feature lovely jetted plunge pools while all rooms offer superb caldera vistas. 

Guests can choose from an a la carte breakfast menu each morning which can be enjoyed from their room terrace and its included in the rate. A cafe-bar is also open throughout the day and there's an outdoor restaurant for lunch and dinner. When it's windy outside the spa is transformed into an atmospheric candlelit dining room (though with a faint whiff of chlorine). Built inside an ancient cave, the spa has chromotherapy star lighting and facilities including sauna, steam room, and heated hydrotherapy pool -- all free of charge for hotel guests to use. Guests can also pay for a range of massage and beauty treatments. The hotel features a decent-size swimming pool (by Santorini standards) with an infinity edge overlooking the Aegean -- though like many it is not heated and can feel cold. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
