The mid-range Fort March Hotel Suites is a residential condo complex offering spacious accommodations in a quiet setting. Perched on a hill overlooking Santa Fe, it’s relatively isolated but within a 15-minute walk to downtown. The hotel offers free shuttle service, and it has guest laundry facilities, an on-site convenience store, and an indoor pool, but there’s no breakfast, restaurant, or fitness center. Its 100 one-, two-, and three-bedroom condos are individually owned, so their condition and decor can vary. They have flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, full kitchens, and patios or balconies, but none are ADA accessible and some require climbing steps to access them. Rates are competitive but for a bit more, travelers can stay closer to downtown at the Inn of the Governors, which has a lively saloon and includes breakfast.
Scene
A quiet residential complex with lovely grounds and sweeping views
This property is a very quiet residential complex, with 12 buildings spread out among nine beautiful acres with high desert landscape and sweeping views of Santa Fe and the distant Sangre de Cristo mountains. It’s fun to explore the meandering grounds that have lots of private places to sit and relax, including a gazebo. The modest registration area is decorated in Southwestern accents, terra-cotta tile floors, and stamped metal mirrors. There are a few comfy chairs, but guests tend to stay to themselves and don’t linger here. Expect to see mostly tourists who like the peaceful setting and the additional space the condos provide.
Location
In a quiet setting on a hill overlooking Santa Fe
The hotel is located on a peaceful hilltop near the original site of historic Fort Marcy. It’s a relatively isolated area, with the closest restaurant roughly 10 minutes away on foot. It’s possible to walk to downtown in about 15 minutes, but the return trip requires climbing the hill. Fortunately, the hotel offers a free shuttle into downtown, which takes about five minutes. The landmark Santa Fe Opera House is a 15-minute drive, and the Santa Fe Railyard Station is seven minutes away by car. Santa Fe Municipal Airport is a 20-minute drive, and it’s approximately 60 minutes to Albuquerque International Airport.
Rooms
Clean and spacious condos, with full kitchens, patios or balconies, and free Wi-Fi
These residence-style condos are individually owned, so their upkeep and decor can vary. They range in size from one- to three-bedroom units with two-and-a-half baths. All come with full kitchens, living areas, and patios or balconies with views of the lovely grounds. Some have a two-story layout, with bedrooms on the second floor, or feature authentic wood-burning Kiva fireplaces. Flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi are standard amenities, and coffee and toiletries are provided and replenished upon request. The one-bedroom unit we saw had an appealing look, with rustic pine furniture, doors, and ceilings, and Southwestern accents like terra-cotta floors and colorful rugs and artwork. A skylight brought in cheerful light. Its kitchen had simple white tile counters and modern, stainless steel appliances, including a dishwasher, stove, and fridge (though it wasn't full-size); some units add washer/dryers. The open living area included dining space with a small table and four chairs, and the bedroom contained a queen bed covered with a cheery, multi-color quilt. The bathroom was clean and it had similar look, with terra-cotta floor and pretty tiling and accents on the vanity and sink, plus a roomy walk-in shower.
