Scene
An historic hotel in downtown San Jose with a modern and cheerful lobby
This stately, four-story hotel in downtown San Jose dates back to 1911, when industrialist T.S. Montgomery constructed it as well as the nearby Montgomery Theater. It was reborn as a modern hotel in 2004 and today sports a cheerful lobby with bright, multicolor carpet and contemporary furniture in orange, gold, and other bold shades. Glimpses of the hotel’s history appear in vintage photos, crown molding around high ceilings, and mosaic tile floors in some places. With multiple event facilities within a brief walk, lots of concertgoers and those with business at nearby San Jose State University stay here. The restaurant’s bar has a cozy lounge that can get quite lively on some evenings, as does the lovely courtyard, with its tall trees, gas heaters, and bocce ball courts.

Rooms
Bright and cheerful, with mini-fridges and coffeemakers. but no mircrowaves
High ceilings, yellow walls, and lots of natural light cascading in from large windows make the hotel's contemporary guest rooms warm and cheerful. White linens and bright red accents add energy and the matching wood furniture has a distinctive amber finish, which includes armoires and desks with leather office chairs. Sizes of the Deluxe (standard) rooms can vary in this older hotel from 240 to 322 square feet, and those units with the least room are on the small side. But all are comfortable and spacious enough to include oversize armchairs and leather ottomans. Larger suites that feature separate seating areas with sleeper sofas also are available. Standard amenities include coffeemakers, mini-fridges, safes, magnifying mirrors, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms also are comfortably sized and can vary, with some featuring roomy walk-in showers with glass doors, while others have run-of-the-mill shower/tub combos, but all have wide, white marble vanities. Some past guests have reported hearing ambient noise from the busy streets, with guests on the higher floors generally experiencing less distraction. Views of the surrounding city streets are unremarkable.
