Bottom Line

This boutique property feels a bit like a city inn; there are barely any on-site amenities (only a computer for guests' use), but rooms -- albeit a tad small -- are quaint, with floral curtains, clean bathrooms (many with claw-foot tubs), and cute towel sculptures upon arrival. All come with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but due to the hotel's convenient Union Square location, they can experience traffic noise. Guests seeking a hotel with a fitness center and more modern decor may consider the nearby Hotel Triton, which is only slightly more expensive.

Scene

This property attracts budget travelers who don't mind the lack of on-site amenities.

All things considered, this hotel is undeniably quaint. There are absolutely no on-site amenities of note, but the small lobby is welcoming with a guest computer, free coffee and tea, and a sitting area with a couple chairs and a sofa. Rooms are also charming (although some may find them dated). Rates are reasonable, but not as value-packed as one may expect for a property with so little to offer. Nonetheless, budget-minded travelers (mostly couples) book here in order to save cash but still enjoy a convenient Union Square location.

Location

Convenient Union Square location

Nestled among storefronts, the Baldwin Hotel can be easily missed walking past it on the street. However, its location is its main selling factor. Next door to an antique store and a wine bar, the hotel sits right at the gates of Chinatown and is just a few blocks from the center of Union Square and its many shops. It is also within easy walking distance of the Financial District, and North Beach, Soma, Nob Hill, and the waterfront are also fairly close by.

Rooms

Quaint rooms are small but clean, with modern amenities

Rooms here feel like those you would find at a country inn. Decor isn't dated, but has a decidedly classic vibe with floral curtains, red-and-beige bedding, and little furniture and/or artwork. Bathrooms also seem fit for a mid-range B&B; they're small with simple tiling, but many have claw-foot bath tubs. There is little counter space. Unlike a typical budget inn, however, rooms are updated with large flat-screen TVs and free WI-Fi. Some guests have complained of hearing traffic noise.

Features

No on-site features

This property truly has no on-site features -- unless you count the guest computer and free coffee and tea in the lobby.
