Bottom Line

The two-floor, mid-range 50-room PB Surf Beachside Inn, situated about a block from Pacific Beach, provides petite rooms and the bare essentials for the traveler uninterested in staying indoors. It's a motel-style property, but rooms have modern, Ikea-esque style. They lack ocean views -- for that, guests can head to the rooftop patio, or walk to the sand. The inn doesn't have many features on-site, but guests can access a pool at a nearby sister hotel. Just note that parking is limited.

Scene

An intimate, no-frills beachside inn

The PB Surf Beachside Inn is a motel-style property built in 1957. The compact lobby has wood floors, brown seating, white plantation shutters, a dark wood front desk with a granite countertop, and a framed illustration of fish and marine life on the wall; a small coffee station is tucked in the corner. Outside the French doors of the inn’s lobby, a garden of colorful brittlebush and Desert Willow flowers stretches along the entirety of inn.

Location

About a block from Pacific Beach, a bit north of the main action on the boarwalk

The hotel is located on busy Mission Boulevard where it intersects with Missouri Street, about half a block from the beach. In the immediate area, there are a few hotels, time-share properties, and apartment complexes; farther to the east are residential homes. This is a slightly quieter area of Pacific Beach, but it's a short walk southwest to the main action on the boardwalk.Pacific Beach attracts a diverse crowd of hipsters, surfers, and mature affluent types, and the area is located in between Mission Bay and La Jolla. The neighborhood has over 150 bars and eateries. Numerous activities can be enjoyed at the nearby ocean, including fishing, snorkeling, surfing, kayaking, boogie boarding, and windsurfing. Attractions such as Legoland, the Del Mar Racetrack, Belmont Park, Windansea Beach, and Montgomery Field are within driving distance.- 3-minute drive to Trader Joe’s

  • 10-minute drive to Sea World
  • 17-minute drive to San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter District
  • 20-minute drive to Balboa Park

Rooms

Stylish, simple contemporary rooms with modern tech and glossy bathrooms

The inn has a motel-style exterior, and rooms are reached through exterior hallways. The compact rooms are simple but modern, with a style that wouldn't be out of place in an Ikea showroom. Expect wood furniture (including the headboards and granite-topped wood nightstands), ceiling fans that mimic palm leaves, and plush white duvets with blue and yellow throws.Floors have a mix of laminate and carpeting, and all are air-conditioned (wall units are visible). The LCD flat-screen HDTV has quality cable channels, pay-per-view movie options, and a video-game console are available. All rooms have microwaves and mini-fridges, which can help guests save on food, but access to Wi-Fi costs an extra fee. Most of the contemporary bathrooms have walk-in glass showers and granite countertops. A photo of surfers in saturated color on the wall in the bathrooms complements the other in the bedroom; mounted hairdryers and make-up mirrors are provided.Suites have a separate living area with a glass-topped coffee table and a large couch, as well as a desk with an ergonomic chair.

Features

Free continental breakfast and guest laundry; heated swimming pools and barbeque grills nearby

This is an establishment best for the on-the-go types who don't need much on-site. There's a bike path nearby heading to the boardwalk, and bike rentals available. The inn has little else to offer -- just a laundry room with washer and dryer, and a basic continental breakfast in the mornings. A nearby sister property has heated swimming pools and barbecue grills that guests can access.
