Bottom Line

The Hyatt
Regency is an upscale resort hotel with an enviable setting overlooking the
waters of San Diego's Mission Bay. Its location means easy access to
Mission Beach and SeaWorld, while the surrounding area is largely pleasant
parkland and shoreline. While many of the hotel's common areas have been sleekly renovated,
rooms are starting to feel shabby in places and not all have sea views. On-site
dining, however, is good, the pool complex's waterslides are popular with kids. Rates are reasonable, though the nearby Dana on Mission Bay offers better value.

Scene

Sleek and stylish family-friendly vacation resort with private marina

The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is spread over three separate buildings: two low-rise structures and one 17-floor tower. It's set in lush tropical gardens with meandering paths lined with palm and banana trees. Evidence of a $65
million renovation in 2010 can be seen through most of the hotel, particularly in the pleasantly bright and airy reception area decorated in minimalist
styling with contemporary design furnishings, maritime-themed artwork, and
natural wood flooring. Although decor and design is sleek and
stylish, the atmosphere is very much that of a vacation resort, and it attracts a large number of families for its proximity to SeaWorld and kid-friendly pool complex, complete with waterslides. Expect superb views over
the hotel's private marina, which is particularly picturesque at sunset.

Location

Mission Bay setting surrounded by water, a short drive to SeaWorld

The hotel is located
in a particularly prime piece real estate in San Diego's Mission Bay
overlooking the waters around Quivira Point. While there's not a great deal in
the way of shops or restaurant within walking distance, there's plenty of
surrounding parkland to make for pleasant strolls along the shore as well as
lots of boat charter and sports fishing companies in the area. SeaWorld is a six-minute drive away, and it takes about the same amount of time to reach Mission Beach. Downtown San Diego and the
airport are also both within a 10- to 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Variety of rooms, some showing signs of wear; rooms in the tower have great Mission Bay views

The hotel has 429
rooms spread across three buildings, namely two low-rise structures and one 17-floor tower, the latter of which has impressive views over the water. Modern decor is simple and uncluttered to the point of feeling spartan, and many rooms show signs of wear. Standard in-room amenities
include mini-fridges, iPod docks, and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with cable
channels and pay-per-view movies. Wi-Fi also extends to all rooms but incurs a fee. Bathrooms have granite countertops and either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, and some are starting to look tired.

Features

Range of water-based activities including kids' waterslides and whale watching

The hotel has a lot of water activities on-site, from its three swimming pools (including
slides for kids) to its private marina with kayaks, sailboats, jet skis, and
fishing and whale-watching trips. The hotel's eco-friendly Blue Marble Spa features
couples' suits and five outdoor spa cabanas, while the waterfront health club
provides modern cardio and weight equipment. There's also a good selection of eating
and drinking options on-site, including the Red Marlin Restaurant & Terrace, serving
local cuisine, and the SWIM Bar & Lounge, featuring Cuban-influenced snacks. Parking
is also available on-site, though incurs a fairly hefty daily rate, as does the
Wi-Fi.
