Bottom Line

Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites is a fun, upper-middle-range hotel with a tropical ambiance that reflects its location on Shelter Island, directly across the San Diego Bay from downtown. Its 182 rooms are clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated, and come with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Many feature patios or balconies with lovely views. The lushly landscaped hotel gets especially lively when its concert venue hosts national touring acts. The lounge also offers live music, and the large heated pool has seasonal bar service. Rates are competitive, but resort and parking fees hike up the prices. A good alternative is the upper-middle-range Kona Kai Resort and Spa, which is also on Shelter Island and offers a spa and its own beach.

Scene

Relaxing waterfront hotel with a distinctive Polynesian motif; also a popular concert venue

This waterfront hotel has distinctive Polynesian decor that is both inviting and relaxing. Lots of light and natural materials are used, including stone columns, wood ceilings, and slate floors. The sofas in the lobby sport pastel green patterns, and Asian art and a wood front desk add accents to the space. The photos of star musicians that are prominently displayed in the restaurant/lounge area are testimony of the hotel’s standing as a popular music venue. The hotel can get lively at times, especially when on-site concerts bring an influx of people to the space. While guests can typically hear music from their rooms, concerts are usually over by around 10. The atmosphere is festive overall, and the hotel attracts both concert-going couples and groups of friends as well as families.

Location

On Shelter Island, about 10 minutes from San Diego International Airport

Humphreys is located on lovely Shelter Island, adjacent to the Shoreline Park and the private Half Moon Marina. There are a few other hotels on the island, and there are several restaurants about six minutes on foot. The San Diego Yacht Club is a nine-minute walk away, while San Diego International Airport is approximately 10 minutes away by car. While the hotel is directly across San Diego Bay from downtown attractions such as the Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park, it’s a 20-minute drive to get there. It also takes about 20 minutes by car to reach Coronado Island, which is on the bay. SeaWorld, Mission Beach, and Balboa Park are all about 15 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Spacious, tastefully decorated rooms with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers

Guest rooms at Humphreys start at 300 square feet, while suites range from 450 square feet (Junior Suites) to 1050 square feet (Grand Marina Suites). Decor is simple, emphasizing soft earth tones, with cream-colored walls and light-brown carpets. While rooms could use a shot of color to add some zip to the spaces, they're tasteful overall. Bedspreads, bolster pillows, and padded headboards have cream-and-gold patterns, and dressers, desks, and nightstands have light-brown finishes. Natural wood ceilings add a rustic vibe, as do light-green chairs and bright artwork. All rooms have safes, microwaves, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges. Suites add sleeper sofas, and some have kitchens with granite counters, full-size fridges, and stoves.Bathrooms are generally large, but decor varies; some have beige tile on the floors and framing the shower/tub combos, while others have marble tiling. Some rooms offer furnished patios or balconies with views of the adjacent marina, San Diego Bay, or the hotel’s lush tropical landscaping. Rooms are generally quiet, but ambient noise can be heard when concerts are taking place at the hotel’s outdoor venue.

Features

Spacious heated pool, large concert venue, lounge with nightly entertainment, and fitness center

The concert venue is also available for private functions. Indoor space for groups of up to 200 people is available for rent as well. Humphreys Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on modern California cuisine, complemented by beautiful views of the Half Moon Marina. Room service is also available. Seasonal bar service is available at the hotel’s spacious heated pool, which is surrounded by towering palm trees, umbrella-shaded tables, and lounge chairs.
