Bottom Line

Despite its name, the Hotel Indigo San Diego Gaslamp Quarter is actually in the East Village, just down the street from the historic Gaslamp Quarter, but this combines the best of both worlds: It's close to all the action but not overrun with noise from the nearby nightlife. The hip rooms have sophisticated bathrooms and good views of downtown. For the environmentally-conscious, it's the first LEED certified hotel in downtown San Diego with eco-friendly containers, low water consumption, and a green roof. It's also pet-friendly, with dog beds and treats. Like other hotels in the Indigo chain, work desks with extra outlets, Wi-Fi, and extensive meeting facilities make the hotel a good choice for business travelers.

Scene

Eco-chic decor meets business tech

The sustainably designed building is filled with plants and oversize windows made for minimizing electricity usage. Colorful photographic murals adorn walls throughout the hotel, accented in places by tile or patterned fabrics. The lobby has a busy feel with swirling patterned carpets, but the high ceilings make it seem big and airy. The rooftop houses a bar and restaurant open to guests and non-guests alike, with a plot of manicured grass for dogs.

Location

Downtown on the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter

Right down the street from the Gaslamp Quarter, the Hotel Indigo is walking distance to the historic district's dining and nightlife. Located between Fourth and Sixth Avenues, and between Broadway to the north and Harbor Drive to the south, the Gaslamp Quarter is a hip, young neighborhood that’s home to some of downtown San Diego's best restaurants, shopping, nightlife, boutiques, and art galleries. It’s also where some of the city’s most popular outdoor celebrations -- Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and the Street Scene music festival -- take place. Both Petco Park (where the San Diego Padres play) and the San Diego Convention Center are within walking distance. San Diego International Airport is less than 15 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Large bathrooms, hardwood floors, iPod docks

Though on the small side, the rooms are in mint condition with a hip decor characterized by dark hardwood floors and contrasting floral-patterned bedspreads. The large bathrooms have glass-walled showers with teak benches and earth tone walls that stand out starkly against the white-tiled floors. Functional work desks, iPod docks, and 37-inch HDTV's come standard, but there's no mini-fridges except in suites. Most rooms have a translucent divider that breaks them up and blocks the bed from view of the entryway. Plush chairs with foot rests round out the thoughtful touches.

Features

Rooftop bar, lobby restaurant, and 24-hour business center

The lobby restaurant, Table 509 Bar & Kitchen, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with locally sourced ingredients, though the menu is somewhat limited. Seating among the fire pits on the rooftop bar, Level 9, provides great views of the city and even a vantage point into Petco Park stadium two blocks away. A fairly extensive fitness center has treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bikes, and free weights. The 24-hour business center has Macs and iPads, so PC people are advised to bring your own. Three different event rooms total 6,200 square feet of space with a range of audio visual equipment and catering available.
