Room decor is pretty but basic
The four-pearl Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines is one of only two hotels overlooking the world class Torrey Pines Golf Course and cliffs of La Jolla on the Pacific Ocean. The expansive property includes beautifully landscaped grounds, a heated outdoor pool, and tennis courts. Sophisticated and elegant rooms have furnished balconies accessible via sliding glass doors, and up-to-date amenities such as large flat-screen TVs and plenty of outlets. While Wi-Fi is free in common spaces, however, there's a fee for in-room Internet. Lunch and dinner are served a la carte at Torreyana Grille or the on-site coffee shop.
Scene
One-part golf course and one-part Pacific Ocean
The Hilton at La Jolla Torrey Pines is popular with both convention business travelers and tourists who want to golf and hike. The four-story, U-shaped property has white balconies overlooking the green landscaped grounds overflowing with manicured flower beds, ferns, and palm trees. A paved jogging path intercepts the green lawn. Wooden benches topped with pink cushions and pillar candles are pretty touches. Cabanas, sun loungers, and tables with chairs frame the oval-shaped swimming pool. Indoors, expansive views of the property are incorporated into the lobby. Orange armchairs centered around circular tables offer a comfortable place to work. While the overall vibe is sophisticated and tranquil, this upscale resort attracts both couples and families in near equal numbers, but business travelers are the most frequent guests.
Location
Overlooking the Torrey Pines Golf Course
Past the cliffs leading down to the beach and Torrey Pines Golf Course, the hotel is located in a business district a ways from restaurants and shops. A car is a definite requirement for getting around the area. The isolated location means the hotel is quiet and feels a bit like a nature retreat. There are a variety of hiking trails in the nearby State Park; some of the trails lead to the public beach, but they're difficult to traverse and may be a challenge for little ones. The hotel charges a daily fee for self-parking and valet.
Rooms
Spacious with private balconies overlooking the golf course and distant Pacific Ocean
There are 394 guest rooms and suites at Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Each has a private, furnished balcony accessed via a sliding glass door. Views include the swimming pool, golf course, or distant Pacific Ocean. Sunsets may be worth the upgrade to an ocean view. Tasteful decor includes wooden slat headboards and a tan armchair with matching ottoman. Flat-screen TVs are standard. Bathrooms include single sinks and large glass enclosed showers. Suites are nice for families who prefer more space; they each include a sectional sofa and dining room table. Noise and cleanliness aren't issues, but room decor may not be quite as upscale as some may expect. They're still pretty, however, with tranquil earth tones and teak accents. In-room Wi-Fi requires a fee, but it's free in common spaces.
