Overview

Pros
  • Spacious indoor/outdoor pool with Jacuzzi

  • Excellent downtown location adjacent to the River Walk

  • Spacious fitness center with plenty of cardio and weight equipment

  • Plenty of historical sites and area attractions nearby

Cons
  • Entry from shopping mall area sometimes lets in less desirable public, particularly during festival days (somewhat noticeable police presence as a result)

  • Wi-Fi for a pricey fee

  • Expensive overnight parking fees

  • Generic, mega-chain feel throughout

  • Rooms lack minibars or mini-fridges

Bottom Line

The Marriott Rivercenter is a large, business-oriented hotel that also caters to leisure travelers looking for comfortable accommodations and a solid array of features, including an indoor/outdoor pool and spacious fitness center. The Marriott's other main draw is its excellent location adjacent to the River Walk (though the nearby shopping center dampens the appeal of the area a bit). Decor is what you'd expect of a massive mega-chain -- contemporary but generic (with some particularly busy carpeting in the common spaces). Still, it's a solid four-pearl option in the area.

Scene

A mega-hotel housed in a spawling building with an ultra-business-like atmosphere and uninspired, generic hotel-chain feel

Housed in a towering 38-story building, the massive 900-room hotel is a popular choice for both business and leisure travelers seeking basic accommodations and amenities you'd expect under the Marriott brand. The hotel's size will become evident upon check-in, as it's one of the few hotels in the area where you may need to wait in line for a considerable amount of time upon arrival. The lobby is bright, with a high ceiling and plenty of ambient light pouring in from skylights. It tends to feel somewhat like an airport waiting lounge, though, thanks in part to the busy feel of the public areas and the somewhat tired and generic decor. A Starbucks and a bar, known as The Bar, are located in the lobby. There is a second entrance into the hotel from the River Walk (one floor below), adjacent to the Rivercenter shopping mall, which has seen better days.

Location

In the heart of downtown San Antonio within walking distance of the Alamo and just a stone's throw from the River Walk.

The Marriott Rivercenter is located in downtown San Antonio close to the city's main historical attractions. Guests can walk to any of a number of area attractions, including the Alamo, La Villita, the River Walk, and Tower of the Americas. Adjacent to the hotel is the Rivercenter Mall, though this shopping center is home to its fair share of closed stores and tends to feel somewhat past its prime.- 12-minute-drive to San Antonio International Airport

  • 1-minute-walk to the River Walk
  • 5-minute-walk to the Alamo
  • 5-minute-walk to Tower of the Americas
  • 5-minute-walk to La Villita park
  • 5-minute-walk to Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center
  • 15-minute-walk to the Alamodome
  • 15-minute-walk to the King William Historical District

Rooms

Comfortable and bright with good work space, plus some nice city views from the higher floors

Thanks to the large building in which it's housed, the Marriott Rivercenter offers some outstanding city views, particularly from the higher floors. Otherwise, the rooms are pretty standard for a nice hotel chain, though you won't find a minibar or mini-fridge.- Wi-Fi for a fee

  • Large flat-screen TVs with cable channels
  • Nice, spacious desks with multiple platforms
  • Comfortable lounge chairs with ottomans
  • Coffeemakers, but no mini-fridges or minibars
  • Paul Mitchell toiletries
  • Standard shower/tub combos

A nice indoor/outdoor pool, plenty of meeting space, and a staffed business center

All-Inclusive / Food

A good on-site restaurant featuring Latin-inspired cuisine, plus a casual lobby bar

  • The hotel restaurant, Sazo's, features Latin & Spanish fusion cuisine and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It offers Texas wines, tapas, and dishes such as seafood paella.
  • Good breakfast buffet at Sazo's, with omelette station and tempting pastries made on-site
  • The Bar (in the lobby) serves cocktails and snacks.
