Bottom Line

The budget Hampton Inn & Suites San Antonio-Downtown/Market Square is a great value for those who don’t want to pay the price of a River Walk hotel, but still want to be close to downtown attractions. One main draw is free parking, which is hard to find in the area, though the lot does occasionally fill up. The 108 generic rooms are well-maintained and spacious, with free in-room movies, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers, plus microwaves. Solid features include an impressive free breakfast with hot and cold items, free Wi-Fi, an indoor swimming pool, a small fitness center, and laundry facilities for guests. Although there are no restaurant or bar on-site, there are a grocery store right across the street and some restaurants nearby. It's worth looking at rates for the more central Sheraton Gunter Hotel San Antonio.

Scene

Spacious common areas and modern, colorful decor

This 2014-built Hampton Inn & Suites attracts a mix of families, couples, and business travelers looking for an affordable stay with well-maintained interiors and close proximity to downtown attractions. Public areas are spacious and have modern decor in warm tones; the lobby area has ample lounging space with comfortable couches, low and high-top tables, TVs, high ceilings, colorful patterned carpets, and funky lighting fixtures. The vibe throughout is relaxed and friendly, and generally quiet as most guests spend their days outside of the property.

Location

Downtown San Antonio, walking distance to the River Walk, Market Square, and Alamo

Hampton Inn & Suites is on South Flores Street in downtown San Antonio, in an area that’s away from the bustling River Walk, but safe and close enough to walk there. It’s an 11-minute walk from the hotel to the River Walk, a network of walkways with shops, bars, and restaurants along the San Antonio River. It’s a 12-minute walk to Market Square, the largest Mexican market in the U.S., a five-minute drive from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, and a nine-minute drive (19-minute walk) to the Alamo. There are plenty of dining options immediately around the hotel, including a charming grocery store directly across the street. Family-friendly attractions are a reasonable drive away, including SeaWorld (20 minutes) and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park (22 minutes). A notable perk is that there's free outdoor parking, though it can get full.

Rooms

Generic but comfy rooms with mini-fridges

The 108 rooms at Hampton Inn & Suites are spacious and range from standard guest rooms with one king-size bed or two queen beds to studio suites. Decor is pretty standard for a chain hotel, outfitted with a beige-and-brown color scheme and comfortable plush white bedding. All rooms come with 46-inch LCD flat-screen TVs with free movie channels, free Wi-Fi, ironing facilities, coffeemakers, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Attractive bathrooms come with free toiletries, hairdryers, and showers with Waterpik showerheads. There are desks in every room with ergonomic desk chairs, and comfortable seating areas. Suites come with sleeper sofas. Some past guests have complained of noise from the nearby road.

Features

Free parking, free hot breakfast, and heated indoor swimming pool

In addition to free parking, a standout feature is the free hot and cold daily breakfast offered, along with unlimited free coffee and tea in the lobby. There's no full restaurant or bar, however. Recreational facilities include a heated indoor swimming pool with seating and towels, and a modern fitness center with treadmills, ellipticals, and weight machines. Other features that add to the hotel’s appeal are a pleasant business center with computers and printers, pay-to-use laundry facilities, and a 24-hour shop that sells convenient items such as snacks, toiletries, and laundry detergent. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
