Bottom Line

Located a short walk from Salzburg's old town area, the family-run, budget Hotel Mozart is homey and traditional with a good breakfast. The 33 rooms are reasonably priced, and the decor is comfy and functional, if not exactly elegant. In-room amenities include minibars and flat-screen TVs, but hotel features are thin as there's no on-site restaurant or bar. As an alternative, the Holiday Inn Salzburg City has more tastefully decorated rooms, but it's a little farther from the city center.

Scene

Forgettable exterior, and a homey, traditional interior

Few travelers walking by Salzburg's historic buildings will be impressed by Hotel Mozart's gray facade. The bland finish suggests an apartment building's exterior more than an upper-middle-range hotel. Inside, however, the wood and marble floors are a sign of the building's history. The library's salmon-colored walls, royal-blue antique chairs and large oriental rug make the Mozart feel both upscale and homey. The breakfast room's Christmas-red drapes and upholstery add to the destination's folksy atmosphere.

Location

Close to old town, a little away from the city's center

Travelers in search historic sights will only need six minutes to walk from the Hotel Mozart to the Mirabell Palace, and five minutes to stroll to St. Sebastien's Church. Located on Franz-Josef-Straße, the street can get busy, although most guests say the traffic noise doesn't drift inside. Business travelers will be happy to know the hotel is only seven minutes from the Salzburg Congress, one of the city's notable event centers. The neighborhood has several upscale restaurants, including Zum fidelen Affen, which serves Austrian fare, and Gasthof Alter Fuchs, which has pub fare. Guests flying into Salzburg will need about 15 minutes to drive from the airport to the hotel. Travelers arriving by train can walk to Hotel Mozart in about 18 minutes; driving takes 14 minutes.

Rooms

Spacious, family friendly rooms with minibars and traditional furniture

Hotel Mozart's rooms range from Double to Quadruple and have plenty of space for any guest. Beyond the beds, the accommodations often include a sofa, chairs, and a desk. Rooms are decorated with burgundy textiles, blond-wood furniture, and crisp white sheets. While the decor probably won't impress a designer, it's comfortable, and guests staying with children won't have to worry about keeping kids off antiques. A large flat-screen TV and minibar make nice perks. One notable disappointment is the lack of Wi-Fi in the rooms. Bathrooms have a bath and shower combination, albeit a compact one, and unremarkable white tile. And they're outfitted with free toiletries and wall-mounted hairdryers.

Features

Decent breakfast and a library

While the breakfast costs extra, most guests find its selection of cold meats, cereal, and fresh breads, hearty and worthwhile. However, there's no full restaurant serving other meals. The library, with its padded chairs, is a distinctive Old World European respite rarely found in most hotels. But the lack of a business or fitness center may disappoint some travelers.
