Bottom Line

Housed inside an 800-year-old Austrian townhouse, the Hotel Am Dom could have become a stuffy, museum-like property, but instead the owner remade the interior to reflect his love for art and cutting-edge design. The 15 rooms in this upper-middle-range boutique hotel contrast period details like exposed wood beams with chalk-white furniture and punchy artwork. But beyond decor, the location is also winning. It's in the Old City section of Salzburg, just five minutes away from many major historic sights such as Mozart's birthplace and the Salzburg Museum. By comparison, the NH Salzburg City has more generic design and slightly lower rates.

Scene

Middle Ages meets downtown cool

Outside, the Hotel Am Dom's smooth gray exterior blends into an Old City side street that's home to a jewelry boutique and glasses store. Inside, the building's framework can be found in bits and pieces: the hallway stairs etched out of worn brick, the bedroom ceiling lined with foot-high wood beams, and the ragged rocks jutting out of the restaurant walls. But contrasting all of these rough materials are porcelain-smooth surfaces and artful details like a mounted cherub head and a bar finished with painted swirls. The result is a lobby and restaurant that combine ancient materials and avant-garde influences in a way that few other hotels do. Such post-modern decor isn't for everyone, but it's certainly an inventive conversation starter.

Location

In the center of Old City Salzburg, close to sights

For travelers who want to see the sights of Old City Salzburg, the Hotel Am Dom is in an excellent location. At the end of the hotel's block is a historic baroque cathedral. Within five minutes, a guest can walk to Mozart's birthplace, Salzburg Cathedral, Residenza Fountain, Mozartplatz Square, St. Francis Church, and many other must-see stops. For travelers arriving by plane, getting to the airport will require an 18-minute car ride. The main train station is about 10 minutes away by bus.

Rooms

Rooms filled with Designer Dreams

Design buffs will be thrilled by the thought and consideration that went into the interior design of the guest rooms at the Hotel Am Dom. To start, each floor is named after a different Austrian influence such as actor Romy Schneider or composer Wolfgang Mozart. The rooms are also decorated with imagery -- paintings and collages -- inspired by the designated theme. The result is a showroom-ready combination of cool white mod furniture, plush beds, flat-screen TVs, and groovy artwork. And in some rooms, rustic ceiling beams provide historic contrast. Bathrooms feature forward-thinking design choices, like a sparkling gold sink and glass doors. Some have stand-alone soaking tubs in addition to showers, and all have toiletries. In-room Wi-Fi is free. One note of caution: While most of the rooms offer a good amount of lounging space, the Twin Rooms are a bit cramped.

Features

A good breakfast, a cool bar, and a hair salon

While the Hotel Am Dom's breakfast buffet isn't included with every booking, it's a nice added perk. There's also an on-site bar with hand-painted details, but no full restaurant. And the lack of a business or fitness center may turn off some guests.  A hair salon is available for guests who want a styling 'do to match the hotel's atmosphere. Laundry facilities are also available on request.
