Der Salzburger Hof

Der Salzburger Hof is situated in lovely four-story building, with a classic stucco facade and red roof. The boutique property is family-run and offers regional style and individual attention to guests that larger, chain hotels often don't achieve. Thanks to a mid-2016 renovation, the lobby feels fresh and contemporary, with wood floors, beige walls, and modern gray upholstered furniture with tapered legs. Near the lobby bar, a cozy nook pairs hanging bench seating with tiered tables and patchwork ottomans. Nods to Salzburg (including Mozart and The Sound of Music) are everywhere, but not overbearing: three theater chairs face the reception desk, and the top of a concert piano artfully decorates the wall of small, chic lounge. Guests tend to be tourists who want to be close to the train station, and the hotel's kid-friendly amenities make this a convenient choice for families, too.

While Der Salzburger Hof isn't situated in the heart of Old Town, guests often choose the hotel because it's near the city's main train station, about a three-minute walk. The area surrounding the train station is packed with hotels, and there are a few eateries, shops, and a movie theater. But for city sights, guests will want to go to Old Town. It's reachable on foot in about 25 minutes or by bus in about 15 minutes. Salzburg Airport is roughly 30 minutes away by public transit, or 15 minutes by car. 

Guest rooms are spacious and contemporary, with brown wall-to-wall carpeting, dark-wood furnisher, tan walls, and colorful accents in bright green or rich purple. Classic upholstered chairs lend a traditional feel, while large murals on walls—featuring Mozart, scenes from the Sound of Music, or local sights—add regional flair. Built-in pieces, such as the hallway closets, are a light-colored wood that feels a tad dated—indeed, room decor isn't quite as stylish as decor found in the lobby. Bathrooms are tiled in baby blue and are nicely sized, with square sinks and showers/tub combos.

Rooms have modern amenities, like HDTVs with BluRay players (guests can borrow movies from reception), Samsung Tablets, iPhone docks, laptop-size safes, and free Wi-Fi. They also feature Nespresso coffeemakers, electric kettles for tea, and minibars. Entry-level Economy Double and Single Rooms start at just under 200 square feet—a little on the small side—and lack air-conditioning, though all other rooms have AC. The hotel also has Triple and Quadruple Rooms as well as Junior Suites, which offer more than 300 square feet of space.  

Der Salzburger Hof has a bright, modern breakfast room where a daily breakfast buffet is served, with fresh fruits and veggies, bread and jam, meats, and a few local specialties like regional Alps cheese. While breakfast costs an extra, the fee is modest, (and cheaper if you book it ahead of time). There's plenty of lounge space in the lobby, as well as a charming lobby bar that serves alcoholic beverages, tea, and a few sweat treats. The hotel has no full-service restaurant or wellness facilities.

For guests traveling with children, the hotel has high chairs, there's a treasure chest of toys in the breakfast area, and each child receives a welcome gift. Other amenities include a meeting room, free Wi-Fi throughout, and a computer in the lobby. The front desk is open 24 hours and guests find the staff exceptional.
