The 67-room Pestana Convento do Carmo is an upscale option located in the heart of downtown Salvador. It sits at the edge of the Pelourinho historic district, and there are many restaurants, shops, and bars in the area. The hotel is housed in a former 16th-century convent, so it is filled with historic charm, including in the spacious rooms and suites, which offer modern conveniences such as flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, minibars, and espresso machines. The restaurant and bar have indoor and outdoor seating, though food gets mixed reviews. An outdoor pool is a relaxing place to cool off, and there's also a small spa and fitness center. A similarly priced alternative in this area is the Hotel Casa do Amarelindo, which offers views of the bay from its rooftop pool.
Scene
Housed in former 16th-century convent and packed with historic charm and character
Previously a convent, this hotel was initially constructed in 1586 for the First Order of Carmelite Monks. Today, it's packed with historic charm to match the colorful colonial-era setting. The lobby is cozy and warm, with rich rugs atop polished wood floors, stone walls, vintage furniture, ornate chandeliers, and oil paintings on the walls. It's a homey space where guests can hang out on the sofas and chairs, though there are enough other spots to unwind throughout the hotel, including a bar. A living room provides additional space where guests can hang out and read the books stacked on the book cases. With its prime location in the heart of Salvador's tourist area, this hotel draws mostly leisure couples and families, but business guests also stay here.

This hotel is situated in the charming and historic center of Salvador and at the edge of the Pelourinho district. Cars are restricted from the area, so it's easy to navigate on foot. Many restaurants and shops are within walking distance, and there are almost too many historic sights to count. Guests can walk to the center of the Pelourinho colonial district in five minutes and to the ornate Igreja de Sao Francisco in eight minutes. Touristy Mercado Modelo is a 10-minute drive away, as is the art-deco Elevador Lacerda. which connects upper and lower Salvador and offers great views. The beach at Barra can take 20 to 30 minutes to reach depending on traffic. Plan on a 40-minute trip to Salvador International Airport by car.
Rooms
Classic rooms and suites with modern touches plus flat-screen TVs, minibars, espresso machines, and air-conditioning
Rooms and suites feature classic details such as wood floors, rich rugs, coffered ceilings, and elegant damask patterns on chaise lounges, accent pillows, and upholstered headboards. This is supplemented by the occasional modern accent that's most usually found in a pop or two of bright color. Some of the furniture is starting to look a bit tired, as in the Loft Suite that we visited. But overall, the impression is still pleasant. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, espresso machines, and free Wi-Fi. Loft Suites have living areas downstairs and bedrooms upstairs. Views generally look out onto the courtyard or pool. Reasonably attractive bathrooms feature black granite countertops, white tiling, toiletries, hairdryers, and walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. Robes and slippers are provided. The Presidential Suite bathroom has a jetted tub and double vanity.
