AC Hotel Manchester Salford Quays
17-19 Trafford Road, Salford Quays

Though outside the city center, upper-middle-range AC Hotel is a favorite for football (soccer) fans and those who prefer a quieter location. Shopping, dining, and Old Trafford Stadium are within a 15-minute walk, so it's not too isolated, and trams provide easy access into the city. A good buffet breakfast is served every day (fee), as are tasty tapas and other meals. Amenities include a gym and meeting rooms, and the 142 bedrooms have a sharp, modern look with great city views. Wi-Fi is free, and all rooms include air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs. Some feature Nespresso coffeemakers. Unfortunately, parking will cost extra. Guests who don't mind sacrificing contemporary style could opt for nearby Premier Inn, where rates are lower, though there's no gym and rooms lack homey touches.

Premier Inn Manchester Salford Quays Hotel
11 The Quays, Salford Quays

With 80 rooms, the mid-range Premier Inn Manchester - Salford Quays is one of the smaller hotels of Premier Inn chain in Manchester. It's in a quiet location outside the city center on the banks of the Irwell River, close to many theaters and MediaCityUK -- the city center city is within a 15-minute tram or drive. Like all hotels in the Premier Inn chain, a Quiet Time policy prevails from late evening to early morning, along with a “100 percent goodnight sleep guarantee” in which guests can claim a refund if they don't sleep well, subject to certain conditions. There are other mid-range hotels in the vicinity, but they do not beat the excellent value offered by the Premier Inn chain, especially if guests book nonrefundable rates online.

Premier Inn Manchester Salford Central Hotel
Irwell Street

Three-pearl Premier Inn Manchester Salford Central is a city hotel typical of the brand. It's a handy base that's just across the river from Manchester's popular Spinningfields district, and is walkable to many city attractions. While it lacks any remarkable features, there is a restaurant that offers decent breakfast and dinner menus. The 143 rooms are modern, relatively spacious, and can accommodate extra beds. Pillow options and blackout blinds are helpful for sleeping at night, while other useful amenities include illuminated mirrors, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. However, mini-fridges are missing. Rates here are quite low due to it's location across the river and limited features. As an alternative, travelers willing to up the budget a bit could check out the Arora Hotel in Chinatown, which has a gym and meeting rooms.

The Ainscow Hotel
Trinity Way

The mid-range Ainscow Hotel is an inviting historic property with contemporary interiors and a convenient location near the Salford train station and the Manchester Opera House. A good range of amenities includes a spa with cryotherapy treatments, a fitness room, and a chic rooftop terrace, plus guests have a choice of dining options between a restaurant, lounge, and lobby bar (but breakfast is charged extra). The 62 tastefully appointed guest rooms have flat-screen TVs and tea/coffee facilities, but lack mini-fridges and can get stuffy due to lack of air-conditioning. Some rooms don't have windows. For a comparable property in Manchester's center, check out the Townhouse Hotel Manchester, which offers in-room amenities like Nespresso machines, iPod docks, minibars, and high-end toiletries.

The Lowry Hotel
50 Dearmans Place, Chapel Wharf

It's hard not to be impressed by the glittering, curved facade and peaceful riverfront setting of this luxury landmark hotel. Little effort has been spared in creating a sleek, contemporary design space with a foot firmly in the world of modern art, from the lobby to the guest rooms. And while rooms aren't perfect, they're the largest you'll find in Manchester and finished beautifully with Italian porcelain bathrooms. The serene restaurant has an excellent menu and river views, but the on-site spa, strangely for a five-star, has no pool. Those not so keen on the ultra-modern might prefer Velvet -- at around the same price it's more central and definitely cozier.
