Bottom Line

The minimalistically modern Hotel Oceania Saint Malo is an upper-middle-range property along the beach and promenade in Saint Malo, a five-minute walk from the historic walled city center. The hotel has 78 clean, contemporary rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers and flat-screen TVs, and sea-facing rooms have balconies with exceptional views of the water and Fort National. A lobby bar serves up light snacks and drinks and a breakfast buffet is available daily, for a fee. The hotel has an outdoor hot tub and small fitness center, but no on-site restaurant or pool. Travelers may also want to consider the Hotel Le Nouveau Monde which has more style plus a spa, sauna, and indoor pool, but is a bit farther from the historic city center and is more expensive.

Scene

Minimalistic modern hotel with ocean-inspired accents

When compared to some of its dowdy neighbors along the Saint-Malo beachfront, the Hotel Oceania Saint Malo is an especially sharp contemporary option. It sits in a four-story, modern stone-and-glass building. Inside, decor is minimalistic, with beige tiled floors, gently curved furniture, and sea-inspired accents. The bar and breakfast room are a real standout, from a style perspective, with an illuminated blue bar, a long couch with a wavy silhouette, illuminated porthole wall accents, and pendant lights that call to mind schools of fish. The hotel's location along the beach and promenade, and next to the conference center, makes it popular with both business and leisure travelers.

Location

On beach and promenade, a five-minute walk to historic city center

Hotel Oceania is situated directly across from the beach on the Sillon Promenade, which offers a broad selection of restaurants and bars. The hotel is a one-minute walk from the Palais du Grand Large conference center and is about five minutes on foot from the city's walled Old Town. The hotel offers good views of the historic Fort National, about an eight-minute walk up the beach and only accessible at low tide. The popular Halle au Ble market offers fresh produce, fish, and baked goods, and is a nine-minute walk from the hotel. It's a five-minute drive or taxi ride to the train station, while Dinard-Pleurtuit-Saint-Malo Airport is a 20-minute drive.

Rooms

Modern rooms with Nespresso coffeemakers plus sea-view rooms with balconies

The hotel's guest rooms are simple, modern, and subtly beachy, with light wood laminate floors and white walls. Neutral tones abound, and are offset by sharp white accents. White-linened beds sit under back-lit, wood-panel accent walls that double as headboards, while armchairs are upholstered in brown fabric. Oceane Rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and nice private balconies with wooden tables and chairs and great views of the beach, sea, and Fort National. Rooms are air-conditioned and come with flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, desks, wardrobes, safes, and Nespresso coffeemakers. They lack mini-fridges, but irons and microwaves are available upon request. Bathrooms include spacious showers with a rainfall shower heads, hairdryers, and free individual toiletries.

Features

Fitness room, outdoor hot tub, and massages, plus chic lobby bar

The hotel has an outdoor hot tub and a small fitness room with modern cardio equipment, but no pool. In-room massages can also be arranged. A lobby bar is open during the evening and offers snacks; there's also an outdoor terrace with sea views. A stylish breakfast room serves up a daily buffet for a fee -- the continental offerings are fairly expensive given what's on offer. Room service is available from the morning until the evening, but lunch and dinner are not served at the hotel otherwise. A computer is available in the lobby and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. Other features include a 24-hour front desk that can arrange for dry cleaning and laundry service. Luggage storage is provided, and paid parking is available on-site. Pets are welcome for an extra fee.
