Bottom Line

This Residence Inn is a solid choice for business travelers and long-term visitors to Sacramento. It's conveniently located in downtown Sacramento and offers spacious suites with sitting areas and kitchenettes, a nice gym, free breakfast, a shallow rooftop pool with a hot tub, and an on-site restaurant with room service. Watch out on weekends, though -- noise from local dance clubs and bars can be heard late into the night, even on higher floors. The Hyatt Regency down the street might be a better choice for quiet weekend slumber.

Scene

Homey apartment-hotel that's popular with business travelers, but gets noisy on the weekends

Though this Residence Inn is housed in an unremarkable 15-story beige boxy building, the interiors are much nicer, with a spacious white-tiled lobby decorated with large, rainbow watercolor paintings on both sides of the entrance. Past the front desk, the lobby opens up into a carpeted living room-style lounge area with two fireplaces surrounded by armchairs and several smaller nooks with flat-screen TVs, sofas, and chairs. Common areas  are decorated in a muted palette of browns, peaches, and mauves. This hotel is a popular choice with business travelers, as it's located  across the street from the State Capitol and has apartment-style rooms with self-catering facilities. However, stay away during the weekends, as the thumping bass and noisy patrons of the Park Ultra Lounge dance club across the street can be heard until the wee hours of the morning, even in rooms on higher floors.

Location

Located in a lively area of Sacramento, near the State Capitol and noisy nightlife

This Residence Inn is located on a busy street in a bustling area of downtown Sacramento. Capitol Park, the rectangular garden that surrounds the California State Capitol building, is diagonally across the street from the hotel. The Capitol building itself is located on the other end of the park, an eight-minute walk away, while the Sacramento Convention Center is only three blocks away. The hotel is flanked by multiple bars and restaurants, which can lead to lots of weekend noise. The airport is a 20-minute drive away; it can also be reached in around 40 minutes on bus 42A, which stops a couple blocks away from the hotel.

Rooms

Clean, comfortable rooms with living rooms and kitchennettes

The Residence Inn offers spotless suites with living rooms featuring older-model flat-screen TVs plus kitchenettes with full-sized fridges, microwaves, coffeemakers, and dishwashers, as well as crockery, dishes, and cutlery. Some also have ovens. The decor is mostly tan and maroon, and the beds have beautiful dark-wood headboards. Guests might want to grab an extra blanket, as the air-conditioning vents blow directly onto the beds. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos and large vanity areas with lots of counter space. Pet-friendly rooms are also available.

Features

Well-equipped gym, pool, extensive coin-operated laundry facilities, and restaurant with room service

The features at the Residence Inn are targeted to its main customer base of business travelers, and include homelike amenities such as a laundry room with six washing machines and six dryers. The gym has several treadmills, ellipticals, and exercise bikes as well as a rack of free weights. The pool is shallow and surrounded by taller towers of rooms, and the towers block out the sun, keeping the water temperature chilly most of the time. However, guests can always dip into the adjacent hot tub to warm up. The hotel also offers meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, a free continental breakfast buffet, and an on-site bar and restaurant offering room service.  On-site parking is available, but it's expensive.
