Bottom Line

The three-pearl Vaticano84 is an intimate, four-room property situated within an apartment complex right outside the walls of Vatican City, just a three-minute walk from the entrance to the Vatican Museums. Common areas are limited to small lobby dining space and an outdoor terrace, and an extremely simple (but free) breakfast is offered in-room. Rooms, designed for two to four guests, are clean, modern, and compact with en-suite bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and minibars, gently stocked with free drinks and replenished daily. One room here has a kitchenette, but guests looking for more apartment-style options might consider the nearby Residence Candia.

Scene

Four-room hotel with modern apartment-complex feel

A little difficult to find at first, the Vaticano84 is situated within a brick and salmon-pink apartment complex that offers access via an exterior callbox. Opened in 2012, this privately owned establishment markets itself as a bed-and-breakfast, but in many ways feels like a private apartment complex. (Breakfast, after all, is served in-room.) The bright, glass-roofed "lobby" feels more like a modern dining area -- it's mostly taken up by a glass table and chic stools upholstered in white and finished with chrome legs. This area leads directly to a small terrace with wicker-style patio furniture, but this is the extent of the common spaces. But guests, which include couples and small families, aren't usually here to hangout at a hotel, they're here to see Vatican City right outside this property's front doors.

Location

Exceptional location right next to Vatican City

Vaticano84 is exceptionally well located right outside the walls of Vatican City, just a short walk from the entrance to the Vatican Museums. Restaurants and shops are in walking distance, many lining the streets in and around Via Cola di Rienzo, about a 10-minute walk. For sights farther out, the Cipro metro station is a five-minute walk and several buses are in walking distance from the hotel. Most central Rome sights can be reached in about 20 minutes.- Three-minute walk to the Vatican Museums

  • Nine-minute walk to Piazza del Risorgimento
  • 14-minute walk to St. Peter's Basilica
  • 15 minutes to the Spanish Steps via the metro
  • 20 minutes to the Pantheon via bus
  • 20 minutes to Trevi Fountain via the metro
  • 24 minutes to Termini Train Station via the metro
  • 30 minutes to Colosseum via the metro
  • One hour to Leonardo da Vinci International via public transit

Rooms

Four comfortable, modern rooms with minibars, terraces, and flat-screen TVs

The hotel has four homey, modern rooms, each named after a famous Italian artist. Bare wood floors meet white walls, while bright accent walls (freshly painted in late 2016) and modern art add flair. Furniture and platform beds are just wood laminate fare, but everything comes together tastefully. Bathrooms are compact but contemporary with beige tiling, bidets, and glass shower stalls.Room sizes include the double Leonardo and Raffaello Rooms and the double Michelangelo Room, which features a Murphy-style bed and a kitchenette cleverly encased in an oversized wardrobe. The rooms are fairly small, but make good use of space. The Giotto Room is the largest -- more than twice the size of the smallest double -- with space for four guests. All rooms, save the Michelangelo, have terrace access. All rooms are air-conditioned and include 28-inch flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Minibars are lightly stocked, but contents are free of charge and replenished daily. There's no in-room coffeemakers, though there is one in the lobby that guests are free to use. Bathrooms include hairdryers and free individual toiletries. Rooms are cleaned daily.

Features

Few extra property features

In terms of features, the Vaticano84 has little to speak of. There's a small reception area with a table and chairs, plus a nice machine for coffee, available for free throughout the day. The reception area leads directly onto an intimate outdoor terrace with faux-wicker seating. An extremely simple breakfast (croissants, toast, juice) is served in-room free of charge. The hotel offers cribs and extra beds, and Wi-Fi throughout is free.
