Bottom Line

Within walking distance of the Colosseum and Termini Station, the two-and-a-half pearl Tirreno Hotel is a family-owned property that makes a convenient, no-frills base for visiting the sights. The 44 rooms include flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars, and free Wi-Fi -- and some have terraces -- but decor is uninspired, right down to the laminate wood furniture, floral-patterned bedspreads, and matching drapes. The hotel has a bar for coffee or cocktails, as well as a breakfast room where a free continental buffet is served. There's also a large courtyard with an aqua-blue tile floor, tables and chairs, and benches. Travelers might want to compare rates with the Hotel Fellini, which is close to the Trevi Fountain.

Scene

Modestly decorated family-operated property with a spacious courtyard

The Tirreno is a family-run hotel that was reportedly once the home of Italian Baroque painter Domenichino. Today, two double wooden doors lead into the small lobby filled with Roman paintings and a sculpture, while garden murals and faux flowers decorate the hallways. The property has spacious common areas that include a bar with black leather sofas and a breakfast room with a lounge area. A slightly weathered courtyard has a handful of tables surrounded by greenery and it sits between the first and second floors. While the rooms are old-fashioned, the hotel's affordable rates and location near the Colosseum make it a suitable choice for budget-minded travelers.

Location

On a quiet street within walking distance of the Colosseum

This hotel is nestled between the Colosseum and Termini Station, both of which are within walking distance. The hotel is on a side street, lowering the noise that often comes with such a central location. Trattorias and Irish bars are in the immediate area. Other sights -- including the Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, and Trevi Fountain -- are a 20- to 30-minute walk away, but are more easily reached via public transportation. The St. Peter's Basilica, Piazza Navona, and Vatican are within a 30- to 40-minute metro ride. The drive to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport and Ciampino Airport takes about 30 minutes.

Rooms

Modest rooms with floral textiles, minibars, and balconies in some

The 44 rooms at the Tirreno Hotel, which range from Singles to Quads with three or four beds, are dated and in need of a refurbishment -- think blue floral linens and laminate furniture. Guests have also complained about drooping or lumpy mattresses. All rooms include small flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, tiny safes, and minibars, but they lack coffee- or tea-making facilities. Higher-priced rooms have balconies, of which some overlook the courtyard. Small bathrooms have showers and wall-mounted hairdryers, while Quadruple Rooms have shower/tub combos. Accessible rooms are also available.

Features

Free breakfast, a bar, a courtyard, and front-desk services

A free continental breakfast of croissants, eggs, cereal, juice, and coffee is served in a spacious dining room with an ample number of tables and chairs; courtyard seating is available in the warmer months. There's also a small bar for coffee or cocktails. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and the front desk offers services such as luggage storage, ticket assistance, and airport transfers.
