Hotel's location can be tricky to find at first
The Smeraldo Hotel is a mid-range hotel in the center of historic Rome -- close to de' Fiori and Piazza Navona -- and situated on a narrow cobbled alley with the cafes, shops, and boutiques typical of old Rome. The interior has been renovated to feature sleek and modern decor with plenty of natural light. While the 50 guest rooms are compact, they do feature contemporary designs and include flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning -- some rooms have balconies. Features are few, but include free Wi-Fi and a rooftop terrace with bar service. A free continental buffet breakfast is available, served in a bright and airy breakfast room. Hotel Campo De'Fiori has similar rates and features, though there are better panoramic views of Rome from its three-tiered terrace.
Scene
Bright and modern hotel with contemporary decor and a rooftop terrace
Smeraldo Hotel is housed in a building situated on a typical Roman alley with cobbled streets and ample surrounding cafes. From the outside, one might not think much of the hotel, though once inside, guests are welcomed into a bright and modern lobby. White is the predominant color, for an airy and bright look throughout the hotel. Interiors are elegant and modern, with ultra contemporary artwork on the walls and the occasional sculpture placed throughout the common areas. Furnishings are low key and mostly done in a gray color palette. The breakfast room has a bright and modern design. Another key area is the rooftop terrace with a garden and seating area (with bar service), overlooking the rooftops of old Rome. The hotel mainly attracts tourists who are looking for a central base to explore Rome's attractions.
Location
Central location, close to Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona
Smeraldo Hotel's location is possibly its best asset. Its tucked away location down a traffic restricted street is tricky to find at first, though the secluded feeling later adds to its appeal. Right outside the hotel is a bakery and cafe, and there's a grocery store just up the street along with local restaurants and bars. It's a three-minute walk to Campo de' Fiori, a six-minute walk to River Tiber, and a 10-minute walk to Piazza Navona. Trevi Fountain, Castel Sant'Angelo, and Trastevere are all a 15-minute walk from the hotel. St. Peter's is a 20-minute walk. The Colosseum is a 10-minute cab ride away, and the Spanish Steps are a 15-minute drive. While the metro is a bit far to reach on foot, there's a tram stop just down the road from the hotel. It's a 15-minute drive to the Termini Train Station and a 40-minute drive to Leonardo da Vinci International Airport.
Rooms
Sleek and small rooms feature flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning
The 50 guest rooms in Smeraldo Hotel are spread across four floors, accessed by two elevators. The decor is similarly sleek and simple across all categories, with basic wooden furniture, plain white walls, and black and gray cushions. The rooms are quite small across the categories and Small Rooms are downright claustrophobia inducing. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, safes, and work desks -- though they lack electric kettles. All rooms overlook Rome's old town alleys. The en-suite bathrooms are relatively small and include a stall shower, hairdryer, and free toiletries. Note that some rooms are housed in the Via dei Chiavari 32 annex, located 10 meters from the main building. These rooms include a terrace overlooking the domes of Rome.
Features
Rooftop terrace, free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi
Smeraldo Hotel's greatest feature is its central location, and most guests spend very little time in the hotel other than to sleep and eat breakfast. A free continental buffet breakfast is served in a bright and modern breakfast room. There's also the option for room service. Cocktails are served on the rooftop terrace. Limited business services are provided, as well as a concierge service. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. You'll have to find parking elsewhere, as there's none on-site.
