The quaint and cozy three-pearl Relais 6 has a peaceful location far from the bustle of the city center and an interesting, historic WWII past. The 16-room boutique property is homey and
welcoming, providing rooms with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars (with
some free soft drinks), though no in-room tea- and coffee-making facilities. The
lovely courtyard is an attractive feature of the property, as is the free
breakfast, rooftop terrace, small gym, and on-site WWII museum. If you can get
past the removed location and the lack of a restaurant, it’s a good hotel for a decent price. Travelers may want to
consider the Palatino Grand Hotel Rome which has two restaurants and a superb
city center location.
Scene
Boutique, homey hotel with a historic WWII background
Relais 6 may not be a
particularly historic hotel compared to others in Rome (it was only built in
the 1930s), but it has an interesting history as a base for the
Allied forces during WWII. There’s a WWII museum
on-site, as well as a glass floor that exhibits parts of old Rome found beneath
the foundation of the building. The hotel offers a lovely lobby lounge with parquet floors, a
wood-burning fireplace surrounded by a striped couch and leather chairs, and a
small bar. Decor in the common areas is classic and comfortable, with nods to
the early 20th century such as displays of old typewriters or
antique silver spoons. There's also a cozy breakfast room with modern wooden tables and chairs, plus antique
pieces such as a wooden hutch or classic artwork in gilded frames. The hotel's
private courtyard has restored Roman stone paving and is nice days on
warm days. Most guests are couples and families.
Location
Outside of the city center but near public transportation
Relais 6 is located in a quiet area outside of the city center, a four-minute walk to LUISS University and a three-minute walk to the Russian Embassy. Unfortunately, the area doesn't have many
restaurant options and not many attractions can be reached on foot. Villa
Torlonia is an eight-minute walk away, as is the Mausoleum of Santa Costanza. Bigger
attractions would be better reached by public transportation such as the Colosseum (17 minutes), Vatican City (47 minutes), and the Spanish Steps (22 minutes). There’s a bus stop a one-minute walk from
the hotel, and it takes about 20 minutes to reach the city center by bus. The
closest metro stop is a six-minute walk away. Leonardo da Vinci International
Airport is a 38-minute drive away.
Rooms
Inviting rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars (some with free drinks), and sometimes terraces
The 16 rooms at Relais 6 range from Standards to
Family Rooms to Suites, and though all have different decor, they share a
similar style. Wood floors, antique wooden wardrobes, heavy floral drapes, and
either tan or red walls make for a homey atmosphere. However, the decor is on the dated side, with some wear and tear. While rooms lack tea- and coffee-making facilities, all have
flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and minibars. The first round of soft drinks
in the minibars are free for all room types, except Standard Rooms. Some of the
Family Rooms have kitchens, though they cost an extra fee to use. Some rooms have
patios and terraces, while Top Floor Rooms have direct access to the rooftop
terrace. Top Floor Rooms, Family Rooms,
and Suites also have living rooms. Bathrooms are decorated with colorful, intricately patterned Vietri ceramic tiles and come with walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, bidets, and plenty of free toiletries.
Features
Free breakfast, outdoor patio, rooftop terrace, small gym, meeting room, bar, and WWII museum
While Relais 6 is missing some of the expected amenities for a mid-range hotel, it provides quite a few surprising extras. Though there’s no restaurant on-site, there is a small bar that serves a few drinks in the lobby, and the hotel sometimes hosts cooking classes and tastings in the kitchen located in the cellar. A free breakfast is served as well, with the option of room service each morning
for those who don't want to take it in the breakfast room or on the outdoor patio. The hotel's tiny gym -- made up of a bike, treadmill, and weight-training machine -- sits by a little lounge with a few small loveseats. There's also a terrace with lounge chairs for guest use. Meetings can be held in the hotel’s
single meeting room which has auditorium-style seating for up to 35
people. The Museum of Allied Forces
Rome is located on-site and features memorabilia from the 1930s and '40s. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and while there's no on-site parking, nearby fee parking is available. Airport transfers can also be arranged through the front desk.
