Bottom Line

The mid-range Park Hotel Villaferrata is set in the picturesque Castelli Romani Regional Park south of Rome. It’s surrounded by lush landscaping, gardens, and towering trees, making it popular for weddings and other social events. But it's about a 40-minute drive to central Rome -- the hotel offers free shuttle service to the Frascati train station, and from there, the trip into Rome can take up to an hour. Its 70 rooms have balconies and marble bathrooms, but the decor is dated and TVs are tube-style. There's an on-site restaurant, and a breakfast buffet is included in the already attractive room rates. For a central Rome hotel with only slightly higher rates, travelers might want to consider the Hotel Villa San Pio.

Scene

A popular hotel for corporate and social events in a serene park setting

Bordering a beautiful park, the Park Hotel Villaferrata is surrounded by strikingly lush landscaping, including towering trees and expansive lawns that are often the scene for weddings and other social events. The lobby has an opulent ambience, with white-and-brown marble floors leading to a large reception desk with green-and-beige marble facing. A piano and two white sofas on an Oriental rug rest in front of the desk. On the other side of the piano is the lobby bar, with clusters of wood upholstered chairs around glass-top oval tables. Fine antiques and traditional oil paintings in gold frames decorate the space, but some details like cherub-adorned lamps, can feel overdone. A bank of large windows framed by wood panels looks out onto a covered outdoor dining area with potted flowers. This is a peaceful hotel in a naturally serene setting that gets a bit overrun and busy when hosting corporate or social events. It’s also a popular stop for tour groups.

Location

Bordering Castelli Romani Regional Park, about a 40-minute drive to central Rome

The hotel is situated south of Rome within the Castelli Romani Regional Park, surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees. While there are some restaurants within walking or driving distance, the hotel is fairly isolated. The property offers free shuttle service to the Frascati train station, which takes about five minutes. From there, train service into central Rome takes 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the exact destination. Driving times are roughly the same. Ciampino Airport is a 20-minute drive from the hotel, while Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport is a 35-minute drive.

Rooms

Traditionally decorated -- and a bit dated -- with mini-fridges and marble bathrooms

The Park Hotel Villaferrata's 70 rooms are sunny and airy, thanks to a white-and-cream color palette, seen in the walls and white-wood furniture. But loud crimson carpeting drags things down a notch, as do the dated bedspreads with white, gold, red, and green stripes, echoed in the drapes and padded headboards. Furniture also shows a bit of signs of wear, and generic floral prints on the walls also feels like an afterthought. Most rooms come with two twin beds, but there are some Triples and Quadruples (with bunk beds). Suites have hardwood floors, separate living rooms, and darker marigold-colored walls. All rooms have balconies or patios, with chairs and lovely views of the surrounding gardens. Bathrooms have beige marble tiling and walk-in showers. Some of the white ceramic vanities have double sinks as well, and include bidets. All rooms include mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi, but some guests have complained about a spotty signal. TVs are tube-style rather than flat-screens. While the surrounding area is quiet, rooms do pick up ambient noise from neighbors.

Features

Event space, restaurant, and freebies including a breakfast buffet, shuttle service, and parking

This hotel caters to groups, with large inventory of indoor and outdoor event space. Four indoor meeting rooms are available, and outdoor areas include spacious patios and gazebos on the large lawn. The outdoor pool area also hosts events. A hot breakfast buffet with eggs and meats is included in the room rates. The restaurant, which specializes in local and regional Italian fare, also serves lunch and dinner. The lobby bar is open throughout the day. The hotel offers a free scheduled shuttle to the Frascati train station, as well as free parking. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, which has a business center. Self-service laundry facilities are also on site. The front desk has a safe deposit box for guests' use.
