The 84-room Occidental Aurelia was converted from religious housing in 2011, and the decor throughout is fresh and modern. The bright, spacious rooms are decorated in neutral colors, and the bathrooms are large and sleek. Its sleepy location, however, doesn’t make it a great option for all visitors. The hotel is best suited for business travelers or families with older children who don’t mind the 15-minute walk to the metro. Prices are very affordable when compared to similar hotels in the city center, and nearby attractions include the beautiful Villa Doria Pamphili Park.
Scene
A quiet, calm hotel with modern design
What the Occidental Aurelia hotel lacks in a happening scene, it makes up for in space. The big, airy lobby area, in some ways mirroring the decor of the rooms themselves, offers a very basic, modern aesthetic with brown and neutral earth tones. The spacious rooms are the tradeoff for the remote location, which makes the hotel more ideal for business travelers than for tourists. Common areas include a small hotel bar open from morning to late evening and an inviting breakfast room.
Location
In a sleepy, safe area of Rome without much dining in the immediate vicinity
The Occidental Aurelia is located in a stylish, affluent area of Rome, which is great for anyone who is looking to decompress at night without the fear of noisy street traffic keeping them awake. Unfortunately, it also means there are far less dining, shopping, and nightlife options in the immediate vicinity. The metro is a solid 15-minute walk away, and it’s about a 20-minute bus ride from the hotel to Rome’s city center and popular sites such as the Spanish Steps. However, the hotel is not far from the Vatican (about a 30-minute walk or shorter bus ride) and it’s close to one of Rome’s most picturesque parks, Villa Doria Pamphili.
Rooms
Spacious rooms with modern furniture and plenty of natural light
Compared with many other options in Rome, the rooms at the hotel come out ahead: They’re spacious, bright, and clean with comfortable mattresses and flat-screen TVs. They are modern and understated, with a neutral color scheme (beige comforters, oversize beige padded headboards). The ample space carries over to the bathrooms, which have modern fixtures, including rain showerheads. There have been some visitor complaints about thin walls and thermostat control, with rooms feeling too warm.
Features
Free Wi-Fi and a breakfast buffet, but little else
Besides its somewhat inconvenient location, the glaring drawback with the Occidental Aurelia is the conspicuous lack of property features. Besides the free Wi-Fi and breakfast buffet with hot and cold items (included in most rates), expect very little else: There’s no fitness center, pool, or spa to be found.
