The NH Roma Villa
Carpegna is a large, 200-plus room mid-range chain hotel set in a former barracks located
next to Rome's Villa Doria
Pamphili, one of Rome's largest and most beautiful parks. It's in a residential area outside the center city, but Vatican City is within an easy cab ride. It's within a 15-minute walk from the nearest subway station, which connects to Termini Railway Station. Rooms are
large and comfortable with typical "chain" decor, and breakfast is included in the comparatively low rates. The outdoor pool is a
big plus.
Scene
Former barracks with uninviting architecture but pleasant and professional ambience
Opened in 2001,
the NH Roma Villa Carpegna is housed in what was previously the barracks for
the Guardia di Finanza (law enforcement agency), which at least explains its unattractive
and rather uninviting architectural design -- weather-worn concrete and
white-tiling add to its unappealing aspect. Inside, however, the spacious,
low-lit lobby is far more welcoming, with its polished marble and dark-wood
paneling with contemporary comfy seating and gold trim. The ambience is hushed
and business-like, with the occasional flourish of pretty metalwork or a quirky art
piece. It mainly draws business traveler, though couples and families who'd rather stay outside the bustle of the city
center -- and pay lower rates -- stay here too.
Location
Set in a residential area next to Villa Doria Pamphili northwest of Rome
The hotel is located
in a residential area northwest of Rome's city center just behind the Villa Doria
Pamphili -- one of Rome's largest and most beautiful parks. Although not
ideally located for those wanting to explore the capital's historic center, Vatican City, with the stunning San Pietro Basilica and world-famous
Sistine Chapel, is within a five-minute cab ride. The nearest subway
station is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel, and connects to the stop for the Spanish
Steps and the Termini Railway Station.
Rooms
Relatively spacious with generic "chain" decor and standard amenities
The property has a little more than 200 rooms, all of which have patterned curtains, generic wooden furnishings, and carpeted or
wooden floors. Amenities include air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, minibars and safes. Superior Rooms have slightly larger flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms are clean and functional with beige marble, shower/tub combos, and wall-mounted hairdryers.
Most rooms overlook
the pool or the gardens.
Features
Outdoor seasonal swimming pool with loungers and poolside service
Unusual for Rome,
the hotel has an outdoor swimming pool, which is open from June through August, providing sun loungers and poolside service. A good buffet
breakfast is included in the rate and includes cooked-to-order items and an
early-bird option. The Gelsomino restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner,
while the lobby bar provides drinks that can be enjoyed on the terrace
overlooking the pool. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, though the speed can be upgraded for a
fee. On-site parking and a small fitness room are also available to guests free of charge.
