Bottom Line

Hotel
Sonya is a mid-range property that gets high marks for its location (near Termini station), clean guest rooms, and generous buffet breakfast with housemade pastries, which is included in the room rate. With its most recent renovation completed in 2013, its 40 guest rooms are
well-maintained and include modern, spotless bathrooms plus flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric
kettles for tea and coffee, and air-conditioning. Most rooms are of reasonable size, but some feel cramped, and decor seesaws from generic to garish. For a property with more historical character and more subdued room decor,
travelers can consider the Hotel Fontana, located in a former
monastery.

Scene

No-frills hotel popular with small tour groups

Hotel
Sonya occupies four levels of an attractive corner building with
arched doorways that also houses private apartments. The entranceway and
corridors are laid with marble floors, and a wrought-iron staircase
and an old-fashioned elevator link together the four stories. The small lobby area
is dominated by a wood-paneled reception counter; it's simply
furnished with a few faux leather armchairs, a gilded mirror, and an overhead stained glass skylight. A desk with two computers makes up a small business center. This
hotel attracts budget-conscious travelers who are looking for clean
and comfortable digs without any extra frills (or costs) close to the
tourist sights. Most guests staying here are leisure travelers, and
this is a popular place with small tour groups.

Location

A six-minute walk from Termini train station

Hotel
Sonya is within easy walking distance of Termini train station, a
six-minute walk away, while the closest metro station is Repubblica,
only a four-minute walk from the hotel. There are many cafes,
restaurants, bars, pizzerias, and shops located in the immediate
neighborhood, and loads of tourist attractions can be easily reached on
foot.- One-minutewalk to the Opera House

  • Five-minutewalk to the Baths of Diocletian
  • Five-minutewalk to Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Rooms

Clean rooms with loud decor and modern amenities

The
guest rooms at Hotel Sonya are decorated without much
attention to style, but they're spotlessly clean and quite comfortable. Beds are covered with loud black and gold bedspreads, and the
curtains are in matching tones, while the furniture is either in a dark laminate or a more attractive oak hue. Overall, patterns and colors in the decor bring to mind an '80s nightclub. Some of the rooms can be cramped, but
most are reasonably sized and have high ceilings. The bathrooms are
modern and clean, outfitted with bidets, magnifying mirrors, and shower
stalls. All
the rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, electric kettles with tea and coffee supplies, flat-screen TVs, and minibars stocked with mineral water, soft drinks, and beer. Note that street-facing
rooms can be noisy, especially in the mornings when the street
cleaners and delivery trucks are making their rounds.

Features

Free breakfast buffet with housemade pastries, plus free Wi-Fi

Considering that much of the Hotel Sonya is no-frills, its free breakfast buffet feels downright lavish. Served each morning in the breakfast room, the buffet gets
good reviews from guests for its variety and
freshness. Pastries and cakes, prepared by the in-house
pastry chef, are included, and gluten-free options are also available on request. Aside from this meal, there's no other dining or drinking on-site, but the hotel does offer a handful of other features. Free Wi-Fi
is available throughout the property, and a small business center
with two computers occupies a corner of the lobby area. Guests can borrow a laptop to use in their rooms. Other
services provided include luggage storage, concierge, faxing and photocopying, and a cash machine is available on-site. Pets are
welcome at no extra charge, and parking can be arranged nearby for an
extra fee.
