Bottom Line

Located in a 19th-century palazzo, the 124-room Hotel Savoy is a historic property whose elegant ambiance has been well-maintained. Most rooms have been renovated with contemporary, streamlined decor (upgrades throughout the hotel, such as elevator replacements and bathroom renovations, are a gradual process here). Major hotel perks include the in-room smartphones with free, unlimited 4G data and GPS, and the on-site restaurant's romantic rooftop garden and terrace, which has impressive views of the city. The central location make this ideal for both couples and business travelers. Travelers may also want to consider the Grand Hotel Palace, which is right on the fashionable Via Veneto and has an on-site spa, but no free Wi-Fi or breakfast.

Scene

A well-maintained historic hotel with modern touches

Scene Hotel Savoy Roma

The Savoy (not affiliated with the London-based hotel) is a historic 19th-century property, named after Queen Margherita of Savoy, who stayed here in the early 1900s. The hotel steeps itself in an inviting Old World style: the lobby is filled with plush furniture and gilded motifs and classical design elements (antique furniture pieces, dark marble) are incorporated into the otherwise contemporary room decor. The rooftop garden and bar -- connected to the on-site Granet Restaurant -- is a huge draw for its impressive views of Rome.

Location

On a busy street in the historic center of Rome and near major tourist sights

The Savoy is within walking distance of major tourist sights; The neighborhood is full of chic, high-end restaurants and traditional trattorias, bars, and cafes.

  • Two-minute walk to the American Embassy
  • Four-minute walk to Via Veneto
  • Seven-minute walk to Piazza Barberini
  • Nine-minute walk to Villa Borghese
  • 12-minute walk to Spanish Steps
  • 14-minute walk to Trevi Fountain

Rooms

The quality is solid throughout all styles of rooms

Rooms Hotel Savoy Roma

Savoy rooms fall into three tiers: "Classic," "Contemporary," and "Superior." Classic and Contemporary rooms are available in single, double, or triple configurations, while the larger Superior rooms come with sitting areas. Most rooms have been renovated with gray-and-white striped wallpaper and modern, streamlined decor, and many have impressive street views. All rooms feature flat-screen LCD TVs, electric kettles, slippers, stocked minibars, and desks. Most notable: Every room has a "Handy" smartphone docked beside the bed. Guests can use these phones to place free local calls, access free Wi-Fi and unlimited 4G data, and navigate Rome via Google Maps and pre-loaded travel information.

The hotel is in the process of renovating all bathrooms to have separate showers and tubs, but that is a lengthy endeavor considering the age of the building. Non-renovated bathrooms still have shower/tub combos, and all bathrooms feature beautiful dark marble walls, hotel-brand toiletries, bidets, and hairdryers.

Features Hotel Savoy Roma

Granet Restaurant's rooftop garden and bar is the clear highlight here. Its panoramic views of Rome can be enjoyed from its many white-cushioned couches and two- and four-top tables -- and even a telescope. The restaurant offers Mediterranean cuisine -- including a special Roman menu -- for lunch and dinner, as well as a free daily breakfast with pastries, breads, eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurt, coffee, espresso, and juices. Four meeting rooms feature chandeliers, heavy gilded mirrors, and classic oil paintings, and there are a PC computer and printer for guest use. The Savoy is also able to coordinate shuttles to and from the local airports.
