Noisy
The Hotel Saturnia is a
low-frills, budget hotel located in the buzzing Rione Monti area of Rome, within a five-minute walk of the Termini railway station. Most rooms have benefited from a 2013 renovation, but several are small and dated,
and a few share bathrooms -- rates for these are rock-bottom, but even the higher-tier rooms offer good value for central Rome. This four-floor property, though, has no elevator, and noise can be a problem.
Scene
Well-presented, converted 19th-century stable with a traditional vibe in a lively neighborhood
The Saturnia makes a favorable first impression, especially for a budget hotel. Its attractive, yellow-stucco facade is lined with quaint wooden shutters, while a smart, glass-sliding entryway is surrounded by pretty climbing plants and potted shrubbery.
The building was originally a stable, and dates back to 1870, although it has been operating as a hotel since the 1970s. A partial renovation in 2013 is evident in the lobby, which has bright-yellow walls and a polished, elegantly curved reception desk.
Reproduction oil paintings and the gilt centerpiece chandelier give the Saturnia a traditional period vibe, while an abundance of tourist pamphlets and small library of airport
novels redress the balance. There's no elevator, so the rooms are reached by a marble staircase -- with narrow metal steps in the last stretch toward the top.
Location
Set on side street in the bustling Rione Monti District, a five-minute walk from Termini railway station
The hotel is
located on a narrow side street in the charmingly shabby Rione Monti District in
central Rome, within a five-minute walk of the Termini train station. There are
plenty of clubs, bars, and restaurants in the area, which has become a popular spot for nightlife. The impressive Basilica of Santa Maria is a block away,
while other tourist attractions, such as the Pantheon and Spanish Steps, are
about 20 to 25 minutes away on foot. The nearest metro stop is Cavour, which is within a few minutes'
walk of the hotel -- then it's just one stop to the Colosseum.
Rooms
Some rooms have been renovated, while a few share bathrooms
The hotel's 18
rooms vary in decor. Some are traditionally styled with chintz, and look dated (or charmingly old-fashioned, depending on your taste). Others have modern, simple furniture, and warm, parquet flooring. Rooms in the Superior
category have been renovated. A few of the rooms share bathrooms. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen
TVs, and air conditioning. Bathrooms have been updated, and some have smart new fixtures. Many of the rooms are small and can be noisy, especially those on the lower floors. Some of the Superior Rooms have small, furnished, shared terraces with views of the neighborhood.
Features
Simple buffet breakfast and free Wi-Fi
There's a daily breakfast buffet of bread, cereal, and fruit, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The staff is helpful, and is always on hand
to guide guests in planning activities, and to arrange airport shuttle transfers.
