Renovated in 2010, the 20-room, mid-range Hotel Memphis
is a great option for tourists wanting to be within easy walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and a host of shops and restaurants. Rooms
are small and simple, immaculately clean, and have a '70s vibe consistent with the rest of the property. The free buffet breakfast is quite extensive, and Wi-Fi is available free throughout the property. Downsides include lack of a restaurant and thin walls between guest rooms.
Scene
Plain and simple, and a touch of the seventies
Renovated in 2010, the interior is modern and somewhat spartan, with a slight seventies vibe. A handful of vaguely psychedelic, bright-red armchairs play off of black marble and wood-laminate-paneled walls; floral-shaped overhead lamps; and a long, curved reception desk. A modern steel elevator and burgundy marble stairs lead to the building’s three floors. The breakfast area is small and bright, although there is little natural light; each black table is covered with a white tablecloth. Guests are mainly international tourists who are out during the day.
Location
Near Trevi Fountain, lots of cafes, and shops
Tucked into a classic 14th-century palace on a narrow cobblestone street, the pale stone hotel building is sandwiched between a pizzeria and a family restaurant. Situated in Rome’s center, the Hotel Memphis is within easy walking distance of many sights. It's five minutes on foot from the Trevi Fountain, and seven minutes from the Spanish Steps. The 20- to 30-minute treks to the Roman
Forum, Colosseum, and Palatine Hill are very doable. The nearest Metro stop (Line A) is less
then five minutes up the road at Barbarini, and puts travelers within about 10 minutes
of the Vatican and Vatican Museum. Termini Station is about a 20-minute walk, and Leonardo da Vinci International Airport is about an hour away by train or
30 to 40 minutes by car.
Rooms
Small and spartan but welcoming
There are just 20 rooms at Hotel Memphis, ranging from Singles -- with extremely narrow beds -- to Doubles and Triples. All the rooms
are small and simply decorated, with a series of hooded wall lights and
rather unattractive striped bed coverings. Bathrooms are modern with spacious glass
showers and bright mosaic tile. Some rooms have small private terraces, and each has a small flat-screen TV, safe, mini-fridge with soft drinks, and free Wi-Fi access. There is
not much street noise, but walls are thin and the sounds of neighbors are audible.
Features
Free Wi-Fi and breakfast buffet
Hotel Memphis room rates include the daily breakfast buffet
of fresh pastries, coffee, fruit and vegetables, cereal, and juice. There is free Wi-Fi access
in rooms and throughout the hotel, with a personal password provided upon
check-in. The front desk is open 24 hours, and the concierge can help with
airport transfers, tours, and reservations. There is a computer available for
guest use, with printing and photocopying services. There are also laundry service
and luggage deposit.
