Bottom Line

In a bustling area almost halfway between the Vatican and Trevi Fountain, Hotel Diplomatic is in a good spot for exploring the city’s historic sights. The mid-range hotel has 45 rooms with minibars, LCD TVs, and free Wi-Fi -- though their decor is a bit lackluster. The standard breakfast fare is included in room rates, and there’s a pretty outdoor patio where guests can start their day. The patio can be a popular spot for smoking, though, and the carpeting inside the hotel is older and has soaked up some of the smoky smell. A more up-to-date option could be the Hotel Rinascimento, with contemporary decor throughout.

Scene

Classic, mid-range hotel with breakfast patio

In a stone building constructed in the 19th century in Umbertino style, the Hotel Diplomatic sits on a street lined with cafes and restaurants. The entrance is flanked by tall, black planters holding round topiaries, and inside is a stone front desk embellished with an elaborate gilded design where guests check in. A narrow lobby area with a small wooden bar and blue carpeting and chairs provides a small space to relax and watch TV. Breakfast is served in a white room with blue club chairs that opens onto an outdoor stone patio. Large umbrellas hover over white bistro tables, while a trellis fence creates some privacy from neighboring properties. The terrace is lovely, though can become crowded with late-night revelers and smokers. Guests tend to be couples, along with some business travelers and families.

Location

In lively Prati with plenty of shops and restaurants

The hotel is located in the lively Prati District, a stone’s throw from the Tiber River. It’s a chaotic area with residences and offices nearby as well as shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s almost halfway between Trevi Fountain and the Vatican, putting both within about 15 to 20 minutes' walking distance. Only a 10-minute walk away is Castel Sant'Angelo, formerly used as a fortress by the popes and now a museum. The Lepanto metro station is a 12-minute walk, making the rest of the city easily accessible. Both Leonardo da Vinci Airport and Ciampino Airport are a little over a half-hour drive.

Rooms

Traditionally furnished rooms with minibars, LCD TVs, and free Wi-Fi

Rooms at Hotel Diplomatic are simpler and plainer than at many properties in Rome. White walls are decorated with wood-framed watercolor paintings, and the carpeting, bedding, curtains, and armchairs are done in blue fabric with flock patterns or stripes. The flat color palette of neutrals and navy and the old-fashioned bedspreads can make the decor feel a bit drab. Wooden furnishings include headboards, desks, and big mirrors. All rooms have safes, minibars, LCD TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are decorated in sand-toned marble and furnished with shower/tub combos. Suites are situated around the breakfast patio, and some have private furnished balconies as well. Some guests complain of a smoky or musty smell in rooms.

Features

Free breakfast buffet with outdoor patio

Breakfast -- a standard fare of cold cuts, cheese, and pastries -- is included in room rates. The hotel has a pretty outdoor patio area with umbrellas where guests can smoke. An Internet corner with one computer is available, and airport transfers are offered for a fee. Guests suggest hailing a cab on the street for lower rates, rather than using the hotel's recommended service. Small pets are allowed for a fee. And limited room service is available.
