Bottom Line

The three-pearl Hotel Columbia offers a great location to public transportation and romantic features, like antique furnishings and paintings. The 45 air-conditioned rooms include flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles, and gorgeous Murano glass chandeliers, though they're not very spacious and might feel too old-fashioned for some. Suites and Family rooms are also available. A free breakfast is served on a terrace or in a breakfast room that doubles as a bar and lounge. For those looking for a more modern hotel, it may be worth checking the prices at Hotel Selene Rome

Scene

An earth-toned color scheme, a bright and airy breakfast room, and traditional touches

The Columbia has a significant ochre and earth-toned color scheme. The walls in the lobby and rooftop garden, carpet in the hallways, and plush seating in the lobby all sport the terra-cotta hue. The lobby itself is fairly small with a marble-topped wooden desk (made from a restored 17th-century armoire), an orange-and-red-cushioned love seat and ottoman, two abstract paintings, and beautiful brick floors. Hallways suffer from florescent lighting, but they are adorned with historic prints and wood doors with raised molding. The breakfast room is bright and airy, with white walls, pale yellow chairs, and wooden tables, plus a multi-colored Murano chandelier, a hand-painted antique armoire depicting ancient Roman ruins, and Renaissance-style paintings on the walls that range from portraits to landscape scenes. The hotel refurbishes its couches with handmade fabric from Rubelli, the fifth-generation Venetian textile company. The modern elevator with a color-changing ceiling is attractive, if out of step with the rest of the hotel. Guests are primarily vacationing couples and families drawn by the rates and the location.

Rooms

Variety of air-conditioned rooms with extremely traditional decor (including glass chandeliers by Murano) and minibars; some with balconies

The Columbia offers a variety of room types; Suites and Family Rooms are more spacious and include two bedrooms, while Family Rooms cover two stories. Overall, the look is traditional and Old World -- think: crocheted tablecloths, upholstered headboards with brocade embroidery, and Murano chandeliers. Of course it's a matter of taste: some guests may be delighted by the old-fashionedness of the rooms, while those with more modern sensibilities might find them fussy. Rooms differ in terms of color scheme -- although there's an emphasis on ocher, marigold, and brick red -- and either have textured red, tan-brown, or cream-colored walls. Some rooms have balconies, and all come with flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, minibars, air-conditioning, and pillow menus. Superior Rooms come with fruit baskets, tea kettles, and ironing boards. Families may be pleased to know that a Nintendo or PS3 can be borrowed for in-room use. Some complaints have been made concerning in-room Wi-Fi connectivity, but the hotel upgraded their system in 2016 in order to rectify that issue. Basic bathrooms have white tiles and reddish marble countertops, though they're small and tiles are a bit dingy. All come with bidets, walk-in showers or shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and cosmetic mirrors. The Natural Mix-brand paraben- and mineral oil-free toiletries are a nice touch.

Features

Attractive roof terrace, free breakfast buffet, free Wi-Fi, and a computer for guest use

Hotel Columbia has an attractive roof terrace with
tables, chairs, and plants. A free buffet breakfast can be taken on the terrace or
in the breakfast room. After breakfast time, the breakfast room doubles as a bar and lounge. There's free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and a computer and printer for guest use. The hotel also offers private airport
transportation for a fee. There's no parking on-site.
