Hotel Camelia is a small, contemporary, classic mid-range hotel that was fully renovated in 2005. Its 40 rooms occupy the upper four floors of an early 19th-century mansion. There is a reception and small lobby area with a computer for guests' use, a breakfast room, and a small meeting room. With the Termini train station, Sapienza University of Rome, several bus lines, cafes, and restaurants are nearby so the location is convenient for those visiting Rome, but most sights are at least a 20-minute walk from the hotel. Free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and room service are nice touches for the low rates.
Scene
Early 19th-century building with contemporary classic style and decor
This is a small, warm hotel that is more refined than extravagant. The yellow exterior looks fresh and pretty windows shutters look classically Italian. On the first floor, acrylic chairs with royal-blue upholstery line the hallways and dot the marble floors. Guests can find a wall-mounted magazine rack holding tourist guides and maps in the reception area. There is wood paneling along the walls of the dining area and built-in wooden buffet cabinets. The hotel serves a mix of business and leisure travelers.
Location
Close to public transportation, historic sites, shopping avenues, and cafes
The location is convenient for both tourists and business travelers, as it is well served by public transportation: metro, bus, taxi, and train. It's about a five-minute walk to the Termini train station, and the hotel is near the Baths of Diocletian, the Piazza della Repubblica with the fountain of Esedra, and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The immediate area is busy and filled with bars and cafes, restaurants, and a variety of shops. The high-end boutiques and shops of Via Condotti, Via Borgognona, and Via Sistina are within a 30-minute walk of the hotel. Along the way, guests can view Renaissance art at the Borghese Museum and ancient ruins at the Pantheon and Roman Forum. A train from Termini station connects to Fiumicino Airport. Note that there isn't any private parking at Hotel Camelia.
Rooms
Cozy and decorated with traditional furnishings, but bathrooms are dated
Rooms come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars. Each is decorated in a traditional style with wood furnishings, light wood laminate floors, and pictures of the rustic countryside hanging in white frames on the walls. Top floors are a part of the building's original attic and have beautiful slanted, wooden ceilings, but because of the A-frame, headroom is lower than on other floors. Bathrooms are small, with blue-tiled floors and walls and stand-in showers. These could use an upgrade -- the tiles show wear and age. Some rooms pick up noise from the street and sirens from a nearby hospital.
Features
Free bike rentals and daily breakfast buffet
There's a casual restaurant, which serves a free buffet breakfast each morning consisting of cold meats, cheese, and pastries. Fruits and cereal are also offered. Other amenities include a meeting room and free bike rentals - perfect for touring without relying on public transportation. Bike rentals are available on a first-come, first-served sign-up basis. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and there's a small meeting room on-site.
