Bottom Line

The mid-range Hotel Aventino is a pretty hotel in Aventine Hill, a quiet residential neighborhood with stately villas in south-central Rome. It’s a 10-minute walk to two metro stations and such landmarks as Circus Maximus. Situated in two lovely villas, its 21 rooms are traditionally decorated and include antiques, and come with minibars and free Wi-Fi. Many of the bathrooms have spacious whirlpool tubs. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and guests can take it in their rooms or in the lovely courtyard. The hotel lacks a full restaurant or bar, but it's a solid choice with competitive rates. Travelers might want to also consider the Hotel Villa San Pio, also in Aventine Hill, which has a bar.

Scene

Quiet property with the warm ambience of a private home with a courtyard

The two adjacent buildings that make up this lovely property were built in the early 1900s and reflect the handsome homes that grace this quiet, upscale neighborhood. The property sits amid lush landscaping and tall trees. The lobby is warm and homey, with a set of matching brown-leather armchairs and a sofa facing a fireplace with books on the mantel. Oriental rugs grace parquet wood floors, and traditional paintings hang below the intricately-painted ceiling. A small desk serves as the check-in area. Outside, ivy-covered walls frame a lovely interior courtyard, where guests can pause for breakfast or a drink. The hotel draws travelers from across the spectrum -- couples, families, solo voyagers, and business travelers.

In a largely residential neighborhood in south-central Rome, near Circus Maximus

The Hotel Aventino is situated in south-central Rome in the largely residential neighborhood of Aventine Hill. It's near many villas, private mansions, and gardens, making a stroll through the area a delight. The Tiber River is a short walk away, and there are a few restaurants within walking distance. The Pyramide and Circo Massimo Metro stops are about a 10-minute walk from the hotel. Also within a 10-minute walk are Circus Maximus, Sant’Alessio all’Aventio, Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta, and Sant’Anselmo. The Roman Forum and Colosseum are a five-minute drive or taxi ride, and the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Vatican City are about a 25- to 30-minute trip by public transportation. Travel times to Ciampino Airport are 30 minutes by car and 80 minutes by public transportation.

Rooms

Antique-filled rooms with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi

Hotel Aventino's 21 rooms are decorated in a traditional style using soft beige and gold tones and antique wood furniture. Decor can vary among rooms -- some have wood-beamed ceilings while other ceilings are coffered and painted in intricate patterns. Most rooms have parquet wood floors and antiques, and furniture includes nightstands, desks, and armoires. Some of the wood furniture shows a bit of wear and tear. Bedspreads generally match the drapes covering the large windows that open. Most rooms have shiny silver-wood headboards, mirrors, and wall sconces, and most have double beds, but there are a few triple rooms. Tiled bathrooms have mosaic floors and walls, windows that open, and tile vanities. Eleven of the 21 rooms have large whirlpool tubs with handheld showers and glass doors. Some rooms have shower stalls with sliding glass doors. All rooms include minibars, magnifying mirrors, flat-screen TVs, direct dial phones, and free Wi-Fi. Four rooms have balconies, and there's one penthouse suite with a spacious rooftop terrace with a table and chairs. Thanks to its location, rooms are quiet and offer views of the surrounding houses.
